So, I've been contemplating for some time now how and where I want to mount this.

My idea- I would like to mount this on a flat top AR for the time being and have the ability to detach and remount without too big of a hassle.
* In the somewhat near future I would like for this to be able to move to a bolt gun which has yet to be determined. My optics get ancy from time to time, so most don't have permanent homes.

My first idea was to get a one piece cantilever mount (Leupold mark2/4, vortex, american defense etc...) I was thinking in the neighborhood between 1-$200.

I don't mind spending a bit of cash for the mount but do not want to splurge on something that will only work in one place and later spend the same or more to have it move elsewhere.

So my new idea (where I need help) is:
Buy a quick detach extended rail (such as the accucam scout)-
Then, buy either a traditional one piece mount or rings (lower in height and not forward) that would provide enough flexibility to be mounted on another rifle. I am hoping with the smaller objective (42mm) this type of transition can be done while keeping optimal clearance.

Questions:
Brand for rail? I've been considering accucam scout. I've heard good things...
Rings or 1 piece mount?
Height?
Other thoughts or suggestions?

I figured it would be money well spent to invest eg. $250-300 for this setup opposed to perhaps skimping slightly on them separate or spending double to get the same higher quality twice. The way I look at it, it is allocating money to the scope and the rifle. Its easier for me to justify eg. $100 for an extended optic rail for an AR and $150-$200 for a mount for the scope then $200 for a mount that works on one rifle and $200 for another (for the same scope). Just the way my mind works.

I understand this isn't the traditional way to go and do not plan on 'rigging' this if it the numbers don't match up.

If any of you are already doing this please share any experience, pics, etc...
thanks in advance for everything any of you can offer, its much appreciated.

Bump,

Sorry previous thread title was unclear. Hopefully this will steer it into the right direction.

Torn between what to buy

Re: Ar Flat Top to Bolt Gun Optic Mount: Help Please

^^ yes,
That was one of the mounts I was considering.
In short... if I buy the QD scout rail from them
Will it be possible to use the mount for bolt guns on top for the AR and then transition to a bolt gun later? Will it clear properly on the AR after a forward mounted rail is on? I believe it raises 1/2" and is 2" forward of handguard.

Thanks again

Get a Badger 22 moa rail riser for the AR and a standard we of rings like Seekins and you can easily swap back and forth from a bolt gun to the AR. I have an S&B 5-25 mounted on my GAP 10 like this and works fine.

+1

brownells also sells rail risers in various heights.

I'm running a US Optics UMQDS 30mm 20 MOA base on my custom Super Sass. Guaranteed to 0.1 moa return to zero. Link below...

My FN SPR will be back this week from Short Action Customs with a nice fresh Broughton 5C barrel. I plan on using the scope from the AR-10 on this rifle for barrel break in and grouping. Haven't decided on what I'm scoping the bolt gun with yet. I'll write my dope down for the AR-10 before turning turrets on the other stick. Pic of the AR-10 below. You can also check Bobro Engineering. Their QD mount to supposed to return to zero as well. Good luck.

The problem with one piece AR mounts is they work fine on he AR but when you put them on the bolt gun they mount the scope too high.

Thanks guys, and nice looking rifles. Earlier today I spoke with GG&G as well and they had a few suggestions and offered a few pointers to help this work.
Their take was to keep the rail a traditional elevated scout with a QD for the mount or to go by QD rail and possibly rings atop (steer clear of two QD's in one setup was their warning).

^^^ Thats a good point. It was my intention to compensate by raising and pushing forward an extended rail in order to mount something that would otherwise be too low and far back on an AR.

Rings or 1 piece mount? Any advantages over one another for this setup?
I believe i'm sold now on the rail+base/rings combination .
My scope has 120 MOA total now, will there be any benefit by adding additional elevation?
Lastly, at 42mm should I swing something a bit lower so it finishes even closer to bore? I'm under the impression that a handful of the mounts would be high enough to use at least 50.
Still undecided but openminded to the manufacturer of either.

Thanks again to all of you,
Very helpful

Re: Ar Flat Top to Bolt Gun Optic Mount: Help Please

Steer clear of anything QD on a precision rig is my advice. Not needed and one other thing to loosen. Use a good torque wrench and it is easy enough to take off and move the scope.

That scope I have mounted on mine above is a 56mm objective with Butler Creeks. That's 1" height rings on the Badger mount. If you have 120 MOA of internal elevation a 20 MOA riser on the AR isn't needed. A standard riser would work.
