Somehow I think I'll get the answer here faster than anywhere else.

I have a Colt AR-15A2 1:7 HBAR that I want to start shooting in service rifle. This isn't a big priority for me but there is a well organized service rifle group at my club and pretty much any excuse to shoot is a good one.

The question is what is the best/easiest/cheapest way for me to float the foreend, get the sling off of the barrel and still stay service rifle legal?

This is not the first competitive hobby I've participated in and I realize that it will be a while before I'm limited by my equipment and not my skills so I don't want to go out tomorrow and buy an upper from White Oak (though honestly it's an appealing option), maybe if I stay with it and feel that I need it but not today.

kinda silly shit, you can use a float tube as long as it does not look like one, why not just allow the 60$ float tube that does the same thing?

Mine is a Krieger (the barrel people):

Some of the service rifle legal free float tubes require you to bend the gas tube in order to make it work with their tubes. Krieger's float tube is of heavy wall thickness, and has a large slot cut into it to clear a standard gas tube. This may be true of the White Oak as well, I am not sure.

I used to have that model rifle. I used a DPMS service rifle legal FF tube.

I also found that a sock filled with 230gr lead bullets stuffed into the buttstock helped balance the rifle.

WOP/WOA float tube will go right on.

John will be in your 'hood this weekend - call him and have him bring it to ya.

Or just have him take your upper home after the match, make some changes for ya, and send it back.

What is the round count on your HBAR barrel? I got a Krieger with 2K rounds on it I'd trade you straight across for if it is not shot out. I'd send it to John, he'd re-barrel/float tube (and replace the rear leaf and front post) your rifle, then send the HBAR barrel to me. You'd end up with a windage adjustable front A-frame when you got done too.

Think about it/PM me if interested.

As far as my round count I don't know. My FIL is a Class 3, he gave it to me for Christmas a few yrs ago. I don't know if it ended up in his collection new or used. It looks brand new.

I taken it to the range once and put 40 rounds through it. Enough to learn that:

<ul style="list-style-type: disc">[*]I hate the stock trigger[*]I don't shoot offhand for squat. [*]At 50 iron sights aren't what they were when I was 16
    [/list]

Right now I may just start shooting it as is (with a new trigger) and add to as I feel I need it. (maybe a different aperture)
