AR loads vs Bolt loads

Re: AR loads vs Bolt loads

For me it varies. If I am single loading them, or feeding fom the magazine. Each one will have its own set up (charge weight, oal), due to different chambers.
Another consideration is the gas system of each.
I have used a bolt gun load with 1.5 grain reduce charge as a starting point.

But what Bullet, powder and charge are you using?

Varget, CCI primers and LC or RP brass for everything. Of course bullets and charge weights will vary because of twist rate and what you are doing with it but there's really no difference in the actual reloading process.

Re: AR loads vs Bolt loads

I don't really "load down" however my loads are different as each one has different likes and dislikes. Bolt is 12 twist and gas gun is 10.

Re: AR loads vs Bolt loads

I use a grain more powder in my AR ammo and designate it with nickle cases. I never see an advantage to neck only on bolt gun ammo as too many of us use it in a wide variety of rifles so its all FL resized.

Re: AR loads vs Bolt loads

I agree with the others on the charge weight - you just have to tailor the load to the rifle.

But, for semi-autos, I do full-length size so the case will fit nicely in a cartridge headspace gauge and I do apply a crimp with a dedicated crimp die. I may not do these two for bolt gun loads.
