All the ones I have found locally have a non-removable muzzle devices. I'm wanting to run my 5.56 can on one and also would prefer it to have a buffer tube. Any suggestions on what to look at for an off the shelf purchase?

What outsy said....

Basically you have a can, why not just SBR an AR? I guarantee you will want to SBR it once you have it-pistols are fun for a second, but impractical, whereas SBR kick ass!

Just a friendly note on barrel length with pistols and SBRs...

Once you get to the 10.5" barrel length you are right at the line of having to worry about bullet stabilization. Most quality suppressor manufacturers only warranty their products for use on barrels to around that length and nothing shorter. Of course, I am talking about 5.56 caliber hosts. And the shorter barrels are much more abusive on suppressors because a lot of unburned powder & muzzle blast beats on the blast baffle. You'll get a lot more erosion in the suppressor core on a shorter barrel for sure.

Do a little research and decide whether the potential risks are worth the sound reduction benefits to you. I personally only use 11.5" and longer AR barrels. Sure, you'll find guys who have shot 5.56 suppressors on even 7" barrel pistols without problems. But once you get below about 10", it really does become more a matter of "when" instead of "if" you get a less than stabilized round. As they say, YMMV.

Best of luck to you.

Re: AR Pistols

Rock River make some that fit what you want off the shelf. I just put a Bushmaster 11.5 upper on a pistol lower for mine. I've decided I don't really care for the AR pistol and plan on turning mine into a SBR.

Re: AR Pistols

I see you've made your decision, but just in case someone else still wants to go that route...

I had a bushmaster carbon 15 pistol until this summer (sold it because it's simply not a practical firearm). Anyway, they used to have quick release removable muzzle devices. It was a collared device similar to what you find on an air compressor line for plugging in various different air tools. It was a pretty tight fit over the barrel, then three ball detents pushed into three recessed spots on the barrel when the collar was released. These QD devices were available without a muzzle device on them- allowing you to mount various different devices easily.

I believe the stopped building them as described above- not sure when, but they WERE built for MANY years with the above mentioned feature. Mine was reliable and fairly accurate (about 3" @100yds). But as others stated, it's really a novelty and its very limited as to practical use.
