There are all sorts of specialized tools... but, you can get by with more typical items. I'll give you a list of what I use to clean mine:
Dewey AR15 bore guide
Dewey .22 cal coated rod
Dewey bronze .22 rifle bore brushes
Dewey Parker-hale style jag
GP brush
Brownell's bolt carrier recess scraper
Dewey chamber rod and chamber brush
Hoppes
aerosol gun cleaner to flush chamber/upper after scrubbing w/hoppes
old t-shirts
q-tips
The bolt carrier scraper isn't really needed- if you have a chamber rod (non-swivel handle), you can use bore brushes throughout your carrier- it will make quick work of the cleaning and save you the $25-$30 of the tool. Might have to take your BC to the store and look for correct size brushes though.
If you don't have a kit for your weapons look at the military kit. It will clean all your weapons. Its kind of pricey though. I think you could get other kits for a lot cheaper. There are some Otis kits on SH for sale most of the time. I use a one piece rod to clean with. Here is a link to the military kit on the Otis site. http://www.otisgun.com/pc_product_detail.asp?key=459AF3413F7A421DB4462B2E01C4F568
CK, In my opinion you don't need any other tools. I use the rod from my bolt actions. The only thing I use different is the chamber brush. I use alot of Q tips and sometimes pipe cleaners. BreakFree CLP cleans the bolt carrier and bolt. I even use it to clean the barrel. I use Slips 2000 EWL (extreme weapons lube) to lube the bolt and carrier. Also put a few drops on the rails to. Unless you shoot a whole bunch of rounds out of your weapon you are not going to have that big of a carbon build up. Hope this helps. I think this is why I like bolt guns alot better also.
CK-32 the guy who I bought my AR from in the UK includes the Otis 5.56 Cleaning Kit as part of the deal.
I have not been service trained on how to clean the rifle but it seems to have all the tools you'd need (including small screw top bottle of CLP - easy to refill).
The only thing I have added is some optics cleaning kit (small lens pen, lens tissues, and some lens cleaner from the photographic shop).
Just keep some Q-Tips and patches in there and IME you're all set.

And I need some CLP.. I think.. I have hoppes #9 Eezox for lube and some tipton bore cleaner.
Isnt CLP just like Hoppes #9?? </div></div>
Depends which size rod you have.
CLP isn't just like hoppes #9- Hoppes is for cleaning only where CLP is a "do it all" (which is BS IMO).
I'd just pick up a chamber rod, chamber brush and a few diff sized bore brushes to scrub out your BCG with. Then either Q-TIp it out or flush it with spray gun cleaner
On item not listed is the Sinclair cleaning link, it keeps the action locked open for use of the bore guide. I find it helpfull to use a cleaning cradle. I have 2 Dewey rods for mu AR's. One for a brush, and one for a jag. It is just how I roll. Good luck, JPG
