Army color schemes, info req.

I have been on the fence about getting an Eberlestock pack for a bit now, I think I am going to bite the bullet. Anyway I am sure this is a dumb ass question so don't remind me if it is. I am joining the Guard and am wondering if there is a specific color I should have in order for me to use for drill/deployment. There is freakin' ranger green, olive green, dry earth, coyote brown, khaki tan, amongst some others. I know the obvious choice is ACU however not all Eberlestock packs are available in ACU.

So you haven't joined the Guard yet? Honestly I wouldn't worry about what pack color to get rather than having all of your ducks in a row for MEPS, Basic, AIT, and what not. Additionally, it depends on the commander and the unit's SOP's whether or not you are even allowed to use non-issue equipment during drills and AT. Equipment used on deployments are sometimes not so much an issue but again that depends on your CoC and the unit SOP. Also, are you going to be in a position where the Eberlestock will have a significant advantage over the issued pack, such as in a sniper section? Or is it that you just want something different? The Eberlestock packs are great, I've had three of them and so far Dark Earth has been my favorite with Coyote a close second. I would see what your CoC thinks before dumping money into HSLD equipment for drills and stuff, they may just make you put it back in your car.

This is something you should address with your unit. I'm assuming you know what unit you will be joining since you are going Guard. They might have a policy prohibiting use of non-issued packs/equipment due to packing/use and/or uniform SOP. Or you might get away with anything. What if your unit deploys to Astan and gets all new multicam items or some variant and in their infinite wisdom demands only that pattern be used?

While Eberlestock packs are never a bad investment, if you are purchasing with the intent of it being multiple use, i.e. mil and civ, you should probably make sure it will be ok with your soon to be COC and NCO's. It would be highly embarrassing to show up for your first drill and find out you just became "that guy".

Perfect answer. I am all lined out and ready to go to MEPS in about a week. I wasn't sure how those kinds of things worked. I am still going to get one for personal use anyhow. I have read a few reviews for the gunslinger II for use as a medic pack, all of which seemed to think it was bitchin'. Being as a Medic is my intended MOS I just thought... and we all know where just thinking can get us, so I figured I would ask. It would make more sense to wait and see how a personal pack would give me any advantage over an issued one. But being as I am going to get one anyways, if I were to have the opportunity to use a personal pack, pending a significant advantage it would be nice to have the right color, but I guess I will find out all the right info. in due time.

Don't get ACU IMO.
The Army is already looking at phasing it out.

Soldiers in Afghanistan are recieving multicam last I heard.
We'll see what happens in the next few years!

I'd get the Gunslinger II as a personal pack without any issue, in fact that's what I'm using now and absolutely love it. It's been perfect at carrying everything I need for competitions, travel, and day trips. The medics in my old unit used issued Blackhawk medic packs and kept them all packed the same so anyone medic could go into it and know where everything is. I don't know how your enlistment is going to go down but I went in on delayed entry so I could graduate HS and go OSUT in the summer. That gave me time to drill with my unit and get a feel for SOP's and what not inbetween a unit run pre-basic program they had. The program was alright, I wasn't sure what they were trying to acheive with it though, it's not like it kept anyone from getting yelled at in Basic. Hopefully you'll get some time in at your unit before you head out to Benning or Jackson and on to Sam Houston, good luck.

DOn't buy jack yet. The uniforms will no longer be ACU in short order due to the new mottle pattern. IF you go guard and graduate you may use ACU until you deploy. Hold off on buying anything to use that will match uniforms and go with coyote or od green which will lend itself to a good bit of Rambo as a civilian but hey, it's all good

Doug has the right idea.

I went with a Kifaru Navigator as a personal/everything pack and I haven't regretted it. I cinch up the bottom and it looks suspiciously like a Marauder.

Yes, the Army is changing camo schemes, but you can NEVER go wrong with earth tones. Black, brown, tan, green. And white for those winter wonderland times. If they make it of course.

DON'T

Last thing a new Guardsman wants to do is show up at drill, "RAMBOed" out.

Just starting out, they will be looking at you. If you used Issued Field Gear, it gives an impression of uniformity and team work. You show up with civilian tactical gear, commie killing shit you appear to be an individualist, commie killer want-a-be.

Get 12-15 years under your belt and you can then deside what you want to carry or wear. After you estabilished yourself as a soldier, then you can play games.

As I said, I'm addressing this from the company commander's viewpoint having had three differant company commands, as well as a Plt/TM Sgt (I was an E-7 when I went to OCS).

OK now lets talk about the Idaho NG. My father was in the ID NG just before WWII. He was in a Cav. Artty Unit at or near Bosie. He worked full time for the Guard, tending horses. Part of his job was excercising the horses which consisted of riding them through the hills north of Bosie, hunting fishing 'n such. They took the horses after the war started and shipped them out to the SP.

My father told me he missed the horses but the SP wasn't a good place to use 'em.
