I currently have a surplus of berger 300 grain OTM that i would like to use but feel that the extreme length will be fighting me. I loaded them in my DTA with 95 grains of retumbo at 3.916 and got 2875 FPS or so with great accuracy. I feel that the jump on the TRG will not make this such a great bullet choice. SOOOOO, I am looking into the 285 hornady, 300 grain sierra, 250 grain scenar, lock base...etc. Anyone have any insight on my situation. I shoot at 1200 yards regularly but plan on getting to a mile more frequently in the near future. With the DTA pushing those so fast and so accurately i know it would not be a big deal but I am starting to think i will have a slow heavy bullet or a semi fast light bullet.

I could get the 300 SMK to the lands from the magazine in a trg 42, but they did better backed off - to me they may not be the ultimate projectile for the 338, but are a damn good compromise for the $$

I shoot 250 scenars mag length on the older 1:12 TRG42. I have lock base bullets but nt had enough time to fully test them -- only shooting them at mag length so far.

I too am considering going to 285 Hornady or the 300 gr scenars, would love to hear from others on their experience.

I will do some testing on seating depth with the berger but if i cant get them within say .025 of the lands i might stray away from them. They do not like the jumping as much. I am interested in the lock base simply because of it penetration...or atleast my expectation that that sucker would punch some steel. I dont need to shoot at 2700 yards or anything, but a mile would be definately something I would expect to be somewhat accurate at. At 1200 my Dta was shooting 15" groups or so if i was steady...i was thinking 24" at 1750? sound reasonable?

Yeah i have been hearing that the 300 SMK are really not too picky on jump and work great in these guns. I am leaning toward those, the 285s and 300 lapua. The heavier bullets do better in the wind and why have a 338 if you are going to only shoot bullets that are 10 or 20 grains heavier than a good 300 win mag load. Are the Scenar Lapua bullets extremely long like the bergers and sensitive to jump or similar to the 285 and 300 SMK
