I am looking for a set of lens covers for my Millett TRS, as the ones it comes withseem kind if flimsy. I like the Butler Creek flip-ups, especially the push button on the occular cap.
I did a search and found Butler Creek mentioned many times on various threads, but couldn't find any other brands mentioned. At this point I am ready to order a set of B.C.s
I would just like to know, before I do, if there is a better option out there that I might not have heard of, or if BC are the only game in town.
I'd appreciate any input.

Re: best flip-up lens covers

Yeah. BCs have ruled the roost since the 1980s. The only minus I can see is that they sometimes stretch a bit and need either some Scotch tape to increase the OD of the scope, or a bit of glue...

There's gotta be a viable competitor by now. ? Beuhler???

Re: best flip-up lens covers

For hunting regular game, i like weaver polar caps. they are a see thru, and come with yellow or grey polarized interchangable lenses, which are nice in wet / snowy weather. keeps your glass dry, and still able to see your game. any slop can be wiped off the cap lenses and not the primary glass. has a nice positve latch on it, with no prongs sticking out to catch on stuff and accidently open.

as far as "tactical" no shine stuff, bulter creek.

i have used tape to make the OD's bigger also, sometimes having to use 3m thick 2 way tape to make the OD bigger and to have some "sticky" with it. mostly cause i'm too cheap to buy new covers.

Re: best flip-up lens covers

Butler Creek are about the only choice out there and they suck. They constantly open when they shouldn't and I've lost the eyepiece off of mine more than once when slung walking in the desert.

Unfortunately they are pretty much the only game in town. US Optics makes an upgraded version of BCs for their scopes and they are worth tracking down. Honestly, while the bikini covers on NF are clumsy and look silly, they work really well.

Sometimes the pin at the hinge of my USO flip-ups start to work their way out. It's something I have to keep an eye on. I can't see them opening by accident. Does anyone know if the bikini cover variety would be avialable for a S&B 5-25x56?

I have a set of butlers and a set of USO sitting in front of me right now and for the life of me I cannot figure out what makes the USOs an "upgraded version". They are the same except for the lack of the flip tab on the rear cap.

On the other hand, the USO aluminum screw on caps are awesome except for the fact that they do not make a rear screw on cap for their newer scopes.

Personally I am also a fan of the "bikini cover".

Call S&B USA direct and they can supply them for you for the lowest price, I ordered some last month and IIRC it was around $40 plus a few bucks for shipping.

Re: best flip-up lens covers

The PR lens covers are an abomination! They let in dust and water at will as they do not seal at all. The objective cover necessitates a stupid ring on the bell. Worst of all, the ocular cover falls off the scope every single time the rifle is carried slung. If all you ever do is take your rifle from the safe to the trunk to the bench and back, then they may be great. If you actually use your rifle you will find that they SUCK.

IMO the PR covers are the only real problem with the scopes.

The covers are an over-engineered POS that were intended to fix a problem that really does not exist.

Re: best flip-up lens covers

The Leupold Alumina covers are expensive, but the best I have seen. Of course that doesn't help you: just saying.

I have all Butler Creeks on my NF scopes and they work ok. Someone mentioned the bikini covers. They may not be sexy, but they are very reliable and practical.

Re: best flip-up lens covers

IMO anyone who really likes BC's does not give them much rough usage. I have broken about 10 this year. I use them alot but they do not stand up to cold weather. At 10 below, they are about brittle. I do not beat my guns around and am careful, but the hinges are weak.
That being said, I still use them as I know of no others that are quiet, quick and seal well. I just keep a lot of spares on hand.

Re: best flip-up lens covers

Thanks for the answers. The Alumina's look to be about the best, but as far as I can tell, only fit Leupold scopes.
Besides, at $80 a pair, I dont know if they're that much better than the BC's. Just wanted to make sure I knew what my options were before buying. At $10 a piece, I'll buy an extra set. Just in case.
Thanks again to everyone that answered.

Re: best flip-up lens covers

Personally I like the Leupold alumina's the best as they will fold flat against themselves out of the way. No hitting your hat brim or snagging so easily.Don't break em though, very expensive. I wish some company would come out with something similiar that would fit everything. Other than that I always use Quake Industries Bushwackers. They aren't perfect, some size gaps. They do have a rubber ring to fit the scope which fits much tighter to the scope than Butler's which is plastic. Another thing I like about Leupolds is the seamless fit. No exterior dimension added as they thread in. I would as would many others, love to see these kind of caps made. HINT,HINT.
