Best hunting caliber for barrel length 16.5-20"

There's a lot of good info in this thread:

Thanks for this.

Cost me a nights sleep to read, but I'm convinced.

I appreciate it.

While I assume that the .308 will be at or near the top of the list, I was curious what most here suggest for calibers best suited (or still having acceptable ballistics) for barrel lengths between 16.5-20" might be? This will be a hunting rifle used mostly here in Texas for everything from whitetail to antelope and even aoudad. I am interested in these shorter barrel lengths because I plan to run a TBAC Ultra7 on the end and I don't want a freaking light saber of gun since it'll see some occasional use in the blind and tree stands. I know I will give up velocity and energy with most calibers when going shorter but I don't foresee this rifle getting use beyond 400-500 yards max. Let me hear your thoughts and suggestions.

I can give you actual MV's for barrel lengths, that are accurate at 100 and downrange.
These will primarily be 15.75, 17", and 18" barrel lengths, with both factory and reloads.
With Aoudad in mind with a shorter barrel, I would lean toward the 6.5 PRC for a 6.5 caliber, especially if you want to stretch things out.
The 7mm-08 and the 308 Winchester will work good too.

First off, I don't use fastest burning powders for a cartridge/bullet in short barrels.
I get great accuracy.
Some of these are obviously NOT big game cartridges.

I highlighted some of these.

If you go with a 308 Winchester, Hornady TAP (168's) work great.

A 21” 7mm STW that I run 175s at 2900 which is a light load. Bartlein barrel.

22” 22 creed. 75s at 34xx. Carbon 6

16.5” 22 creed. 77s at 31xx. Factory bergara

16.5 308 155s at 2750 ish proof.

A 18” 223 AI. Bartlein

And a mk 12 and a variety of other shorter ARs

My Lapua. My GAP 10 6 creed. And my sharps are the only rifles with over 22” and they annoy me now lol.

Shorty with a can. at hunting distances and using the right tool for the right animal no downside.

If I wanted one single rifle. It would probably be a 7mm of some flavor so I could load up for elk and down for deer/antelope.

Having an 18" 6.5 PRC spun up. Any need for a muzzle brake or is there not a huge difference?
There will be several huge differences. Recoil will be dramatically reduced, and your ears will get the hell beat out of them if you don’t wear ear pro.

6.5CM or 308. 500 yards is easy money for either one. Built my daughter a 16.5” 6.5CM and I’m running a 20” 308. Ammo for both is plentiful. I personally went with the 308 cuz it’s hits a bit harder than the 6.5 at those ranges but either one will serve you well

I took a white tail last year with a 20” 6.5cm. 2740fps with a 140gr eldm. I’m hoping to use a .300wsm this year for a little more reach.
