Suppressors Best route for a piston SBR/suppressor project

I've been reading various posts on this specific forum to try and educate myself on doing a class III style weapon build. I'm contemplating whether or not the hassle is worth it, but I've always wanted a suppressed SBR and this may be the last time for a while that I'll be able to afford getting one.

My end state is a 10-11" SBR on piston AR, whether I get an SBR or put it together piecemeal. Then I'll get an AR suppressor for it. I am a resident in North Carolina so I've read the issues regarding getting the sheriff's signature versus the trust. I feel like I know more about the process itself after reading that long thread, but neither option seemed very straightforward. I was also what happened when I move out of NC and take my class III weapon with me.

So here are my questions: is it best to buy a complete SBR and wait on the transfer itself? Or should I put it together piecemeal and register it while I'm working on it? Are there issues with moving from state to state with class III weapons? Since the legalities with both an SBR and a suppressor are somewhat confusing, I'd love to get your input on this. Thanks for your help.

Re: Best route for a piston SBR/suppressor project

From my experience most silencer mfg's like to see 11.5" as a min for .223 suppressors due to heat and bullet stabilization.

Moving State to State with a SBR takes the ok from ATF, Silencers do not require permission, of course the items have to be legal in the state you are moving/visiting.

If you buy a factory SBR you will not have additional engraving on it, if you do it yourself you will have your name/city/state along with the original mfg's info on it.

I was also curious regarding barrel length on SBR's used in conjunction with a suppressor. So is 11.5" pretty much set in stone or can you use a can on a shorter barrel? Is there anything you can do to mitigate the stabilization problem with twist or bullet weight? I'm not too familiar with stabilization issues as I do not currently have a SBR. Hope I'm not hijacking this thread.

General rule is that the shortest to go on an AR SBR is 10.5. Reason for that, you can use a standard FSB and still have enough barrel for threads. Plus that does give the bullet one full revolution out of the barrel with the common 1/9 twist barrel.

Plus most manufacturers will go to 10.5.

I've been reading different sites the past day or so and it seems like NC is really an unfortunate place to try and get an SBR. It seems I'm probably just going to put this project on the back burner for now.

Don't give up!
My local Sheriff just signed a Form 4 (Muzzle Can) & Form 1 (SBR) for me on Friday.

Thanks to some good advice from a few fellow members here, I made an appointment with the Sheriff,
itroduced myself, shot the shit a bit, and discussed with him what I would like to do.
On top of giving up all the dirt on my neighbors, I think I may have made a new friend.
He said that his policy was normally to not sign, but he saw the copy of my C&R FFL and said that changed everything.

If you make your CLEO feel comfortable and get to know you, they will be willing to help you out more than you might think.

Re: Best route for a piston SBR/suppressor project

I'm waiting on stamps so I don't personally own anything or have anything. One of the guys on our local board let me play with his AAC M4-2000 on his POF 9.25" SBR.

The 9.25" is so short the bullet contacts the first ballet and is eroding the inside of the suppressor. From what I can tell the manufacturers recommend at least a 10" barrel.

I'm waiting on a tax stamp so I can finish my POF 11.5" setup.

His M4-2000 without using any sound measuring equipment sounds about the same as my GSG-5 firing 22LR unsuprressed. It's by no means as quite as I thought it would be. Could just be perception and echo from an in door range.

It and .45 suppressor are all I've ever really been around so I don't have a lot of experience with class 3 stuff.

Waiting on stamps for my POF 9.25 .223 and a 12 inch POF .308

You wont be disappointed

Re: Best route for a piston SBR/suppressor project

So for those of you who have your SBRs, how difficult is it if you move from one state to the next, given that both states allow for SBRs? Is it as simple as filling out paperwork? Is there a chance to gaining state won't approve the SBR? Does the gaining state even have that authority? I have this nightmare vision about moving somewhere that will take my tax money yet make me leave my SBR.

For me, the decision is betwen the 11" POF and the 12.5 LWRC.
