So after having my first rifle built, now I'm working on developing my load for the rifle...here is the specs

Rem700 LA, 7Rem mag
Rem Vrmnt, Brux 1:8 barrel with Muscle 3 port brake
McMillian HTG Adustable with Badger DBM
NF 3.5x15x50 NPR-1, NF rings and base
Stock xMark trigger for now had a job on it-2.5lbs(good for hunting)

So basically I have been reloading for a while, not the best at it but getting better as time goes on.

So whats the easiest way to find the best load for my gun that wont burn up a barrel in the mean time?

Components:
H4831sc
Berger 180vlds Hybrids
FDM 210 primers
Winchester brass

I heard 3-5 shots at around 300yards for consistency

This is what I'm leaning towards to start my search. I figured once i found the best combo out of these, the break it down even more, starting with the load.

All at 10 thou off the lands
(4) @ 63.5gn
(4) @ 64gn
(4) @ 64.5gn
(4) @ 65gn
All at 15 thou off the lands
(4) @ 63.5gn
(4) @ 64gn
(4) @ 64.5gn
(4) @ 65gn
All at 20 thou off the lands
(4) @ 63.5gn
(4) @ 64gn
(4) @ 64.5gn
(4) @ 65gn

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would go check out the threads Tres did in the reloading section here on the forum he has everything you could ever want to know for developing a load I have loaded up some very accurate rounds myself and his data was extremly helpful!

Re: Best way to develope a load

I would do your initial load testing at 100 or 200 yards, as further distances will have other variables like wind and the shooter that will confuse issues. I'm not a believer of the load will "settle down" or tighten up at longer distances. The load that shots the tightest at 100 yards is likely the same one that will shoot well at further distances.

Start with touching the rifling and varying your powder charge. Do a ladder test. Once you have found your accuracy node then vary the COAL.

Per Berger's website

"The quickest way to find this sweet spot is to load ammo at four different COAL. Start with a COAL that allows the bullet to touch the rifling. The next COAL needs to be .040 off the lands. The third COAL needs to be .080 off the lands. The last COAL needs to be .120 off the lands. One of these COAL will outperform the other three by a considerable margin. It has been reported that the VLD bullets don’t group as well at 100 yards but get better as the bullet “goes to sleep” at further ranges. We have learned that by doing the four COAL test you will find a COAL where the VLD bullets will group well at 100 yards. Once the COAL that shoots best is established you can tweak +/- .005 or .010 to increase precision or you can adjust powder charges and other load variables. Frankly, those who do the four COAL test usually are happy with the results they get from this test alone."
