Brux just charged my account for my barrel so it should be here shortly. It's a #7 Krieger contour that will finish at 26" with a .750 muzzle diameter.

I was looking for a brake that I can put on it at the range, but can pull off and thread on a cap for hunting.

I was looking at the APA little bastard but it said that it shouldn't be turned down past .9 for magnum calibers for performance reasons and mine is going to be chambered for 7mm Rem Mag.

Any recommendations for a brake that will flow nicely from barrel to brake, and that is not 360 degrees like a Vias break, and that can be spun off and on depending on what the rifle is doing?

Also for you gunsmiths what do you use to make your thread protectors for a threaded barrel? left over bits of barrel? care to sell a piece?

Re: Brake Recommendation

I have the Holland QD on my 300WM. It's a very efficient low profile design. It has 3 large ports on each side and 3 holes on top to fight muzzle flip. My 300 now has about the same recoil as a .243.

I had my smith make me a knurled thread protector.

Here's a pic of the brake on the rifle.

There was also a guy here on the Hide that made less expensive copies. Someone may remember who it was.

Re: Brake Recommendation

Dave Bruno of Bruno Precision Rifles in Dayton PA makes his own brakes. They appear almost identical to the Vias brake that you mentioned. However, he can build you one to your specifications. Im having him build me one without ports on the bottom. So it will look like a Vias brake but with out bottom ports. He also makes end caps as well. My buddy has one of Daves brakes on his 300wm and the seem is so thin between the brake and barrel that you cant even see it. And his end cap is the same way. Highly recommended.

Re: Brake Recommendation

They all work very well. I personally I like the Holland because it works great, and comes with a bell end or can match the contour of your barrel. JP brakes also work well and offer the bold look on the end of your barrel if that's what you're looking for.

Re: Brake Recommendation

A guy named Ross on the Hide here made brakes that resemble the holland style above for $40. I have 3 and love them. Accuracy of my rifles are great.

Same guy.

I've used a couple of his brakes and had a couple other deals with Ross. He's great to deal with and his brakes are awesome.

He will also make a brake in any style you want.
