Broke my rear ring base slap off the rifle...

Yesterday, I go to the range with my 700 vtr. it has a burris set of rings and base, 2 piece, with a leupold vx-III scope. I have never fired hot loads or anything else besides factory ammo. I fired two shots: the second of the two shots broke the rear ring right at the top of the base, and slammed the scope forward as far as it would go. So now I need a new set of rings and base, anyone have any good ideas?? I have heard of this with much bigger calibers, but not a damn .308 on factory 150 grain ammo?!?

Wow, not good to hear. I was actually getting ready to buy some Burris rings and considering keeping my cheap aluminum base, or buying a Burris base. Maybe I need something else now.

Re: Broke my rear ring base slap off the rifle...

Suprising, the burris tactical rings are pretty beefy, and lots of folks here are using them with good results including me. I'd like to see pictures of where it broke. I am having a hard time visualizing it.

Dizz,

1 piece 20moa steel night force base with night force steel or ultra rings will be the last set you ever need for 30mm scopes. If running a 1" tube try the badger or Mk4 rings.

Hey all hadn't been on in a few days, will post the pics as soon as I get home, but the case looked great, no over pressure or cracks. This one kinda boggles my mind...

When mounting a scope, you need to push it forward before tightning it down. I know many guys like them though.

Re: Broke my rear ring base slap off the rifle...

With these "Redfield" Type turn-in rings&bases, the front ring is the recoil ring and the rear ring is the windage adjustment. From the photo, looks like the front ring didn't grip (for whatever reason) the scope tube and since the rear ring is not meant to absorb recoil, went along for the ride. Leupold markets dual dovetail rings/bases which is the same type of base but two turn-ins and no windage adjustment. My preference is the picatinny rail, though I do own a couple "Redfield" types too.

BTW Heavy scopes and "Redfield" type rings/bases is a bad combination. The mounts were originally designed with slim fixed power scopes in mind.

So if I have a "HEAVY" scope then what do I need to make it work and what defines a scope as heavy?

Roscoe gave you a nice setup with NF recommendation. My pick would be Seekins or Near Mfg, but NF will do just fine and I've actually had really good results with TPS.

Almost all our modern scopes with 30mm tubes, +50mm Objectives, Variable, Illuminated would be classified as "heavy" by the standards used when the Redfield base was designed.

Re: Broke my rear ring base slap off the rifle...

While what others are saying about "better" setups is all true, I must ask if the screws were tight. The scope should not have slide in a single ring much on a .270 and in the photo the reay ring does not appear to be broke but to have slide out of between the screws.
Anything improperly installed can and probably will fail.

Re: Broke my rear ring base slap off the rifle...

Wow, I just went to look at the burris brand, and the quote that comes up in mind is. "you get what you pay for"

Re: Broke my rear ring base slap off the rifle...

The rings and base were installed by the gunsmith here in yuba city, called "Shooters Paradise" a place I will never go to again. After the 50 dollars it cost me to have them do it, I brought the rifle back and they told me that I had to have adjusted it or messed with it and would not do anything for me, which is a load of crap. The screws were tight, too much I should think being as the ears that are held on by the screws both snapped off. I do believe I am going to go with seekins, as I am also ordering a detachable mag setup from them

Re: Broke my rear ring base slap off the rifle...

Also, I had 1 other quick question. You can't see it in the pics, but when the front ring slid, it left a gold oil like residue that I wiped off. Any idea what this was and why it was inside my ring??

Re: Broke my rear ring base slap off the rifle...

The rear base didn't actually break. It is only held in position by those windage screws. There's no real solid connection between the ring and the base.

Front ring too loose, rear ring was tight and bore the force on inertia, and those windage screws don't have enough bite on that ring lower half to hold much, so it slipped through.

Get a picatinny rail, and heavy rings with two screws on each side. You'll be good to go.

That said, I've had good luck with the Burris Signature 30mm Dual Dovetail setup. But it has four screws on each ring, and turn-in dovetail front and rear. It's a pretty solid setup.

Re: Broke my rear ring base slap off the rifle...

The rear base on a set like that broke free on my W70 in 300 WSM. It was the last of that style that I will ever purchase. I moved on to dual-dovetail or pic rail style base / ring combo.

Re: Broke my rear ring base slap off the rifle...

1+ for buffybuster. The Burris Signature rings with inserts and double dovetail mounts will solve the problem. That double windage screw mount is, in my opinion, too fragile. Try riding 8 hours with that sucker in a horse holster and you'll need to rezero. JMHO
