bullet tipping die

Re: bullet tipping die

Whidden gun works also make one of these tools, and it can be purchased via sinclairs intl.

Not sure about this one you have linked.

Its considered okay to point your bullets and then lightly meplat trim for consistency.

you have 4 options basically.

1) standard - standard bc
2) meplat trimmed - makes BC consistent across your loads
3) pointed - increases BC
4) pointed with a light trim - increases BC and consistency

at least that is my understanding anyways

Re: bullet tipping die

By just trimming, (assuming you have sorted bullets by bearing surface) you have just effectively reduced the BC, BUT made it consistant.

Me personally, I would JUST tip the boolits vs JUST trimming, because it will slightly increase BC, while getting the BC's pretty damn close at the same time.

If you are looking for the ultimate in consistancy of BC, than you obviously gotta sort bullets by bearing surface and trim and point accordingly.

I've been using the Whidden Pointer since it first came out, and I also purchased the Montour Trimmer. I have found that for what I do, which is local Tac matches, just tipping has been the way to go for me. It is fast, easy, and real consistant. Obviously if I was shooting F-class, I would trim too.

YMMV

Re: bullet tipping die

here is my big question, first off i hate the word sniper but

do real marine snipers army snipers snipers in general trim the meplate and tip bullets or do they just zero their rifle to a certin load such as m118 and "have at it " so to speek

Re: bullet tipping die

no we dont trim or tip shit. We just crack the box open and shoot away, we arent like Tom Berringer in the movie Sniper were he is filing his trigger finger and polishing his round.

LOL!
The bullet pointing die does give you another 3%-4% increase in BC. It's a little work to do it, and also a little expensive.

Yes i was being serious. Everything in that post of yours that i replied to was complete fiction. Here is what we do.

1. We are given boxes of M118LR
2. We open said boxes of M118LR
3. We store it were its needed
4. We load our rifles with M118LR
5. We work the action and put a round in the chamber
6. We acquire a target
7. We range the target and wind
8. We dial our dope
9. We shoot our target
10. repeat steps 5-9 as needed

No we dont reload anything, i asked to take my reloading press with me the last deployment i went on(complete sarcasim in this sentence) We dont trim or point anything, we dont reload anything that will be used overseas or in training. Im sorry that you read my response as a "jack ass" remark. You obviously believed that we trimmed and polished our rounds, and filed our trigger fingers to give the most sensitive touch. But i gave you an answer that wasnt meant to be sarcastic, i threw in a little humor for you though. hope this helps.

Don't insult 0311 by calling him a jackass when he's trying to share knowledge. If you continue in that course of action how do you ever expect to learn where to order your very own "goochie-flage" sweater. (More Berringer movie humor sorry couldnt resist.) Just load it an shoot it.

No, I'm pretty sure Billy Zane was "polishing a round" at some point in the movie (although it was likely off screen)...

Re: bullet tipping die

I seriously doubt many LEO's or military snipers anywhere in the world would be handloading for the purpose of training and/or combat.

A one or two round system is decided upon and then stuck to.

The only real benefit any LEO sniper would gain from reloading is a potential accuracy increase provided he knows what hes doing.

M118 and Federal gold match does the trick for most

These canadian snipers in the ghan that set the current world record for longest confirmed kill, where they using standard issue .50BMG rounds or where they handloaded? I dont know but thats something i would like to know, mainly because that distance is crazy.

But i do know that the record breaking kill required 2 follow up attempts (3 shots total) in order to get there.

You mean you never seen the compact "Reloading Bench and Components" that folds up and fits into a Rucksack? Then you could just pop it open behind your guys in the fight and load some match ammo up for them and yourself. Im sure its kind of hard to ask them what kind of primer they want with all the gunfire! How do you think all that M118LR got made in the first place!

^^^LOL, I could just picture that!

Re: bullet tipping die

According to the guy that made the shot (he was on a History Channel special a couple weeks ago), it was standard US issue 50 BMG round. He had run out of his Canadian stuff, and one of our guys gave him some. He claimed that our stuff had more punch to it, so he had to come up all new range settings. McMillan tried to re-create the shot in Arizona. They couldn't. At least not on camera.
