As the title says, I'm looking for caliber suggestions that work for small frame(AR-15) platform, which stretches the effective range of the weapon as far out as possible. Is the 22 Nosler the latest and greatest?

There's this one guy I saw here on the Hide that likes 22 Grendel. hint - Ha, OR you beat me to it.

I never got to trying Whitley's 224 AR though I wanted to. His tuff is pricey so I went a different route. I did have his 6mm ART40 which was my most accurate upper yet. Kinda a hot load but I was getting 2875 fps out of a 26" with 105 Amax. Used to hit the 1100Y 15" plate almost as often as the 6x47L in moderate winds.

Have now a 6mmFatRat which sends 105 Berger hybrids at 2780 fps out of 22". Just got a muzzle brake on it today and gonna try it out tomorrow.

I'm in the process of gathering parts and reloading supplies for a 6.5 grendel build.
From what I have read it's an excellent round for a small frame AR.

Effective range for hunting or steel? Want to reload or shoot factory loads?

For hunting, the 6.8 and 6.5g work out to 350-400yds, depending on the bullet/velocity. I haven't run my 6.8 out to 600yds on steel but the 6.5g left me wanting more, sold it after getting it's big brother, 6.5 Creedmoor. Both the above calibers have a great selection of factory loads and bullets. I hunt with a suppressed 12.5" 6.8 and love it.

If you are going to reload, several calibers out there like the 224 Predator and 277 Wolverine.

you sound like you don't mind working Brass and Reloading ammo ? . If not then I would go the Grendel or 6.8 Cal.

Like working your Brass and Reloading .Then ( I would ) pick ' any neck-up Cal..223 parent case ' you want to run . It all been done and they all perform well from 6mm and up . The Dies are out there, with Cheap abundant Brass and you won't cry if you loose the brass with spitting them out the AR .
.

Paper and steel. Prefer to buy ammo, as I don't have the time or space for reloading.

Basically, I am just looking for a load that performs well ballistically, for the sake of it.

ive seen both the 22 Nosler and the 22-250 sharps come up here and there.

42 factory loads for 6.5 Grendel now. Federal just added 4, including 90gr TNT, 120gr Fusion, 120gr HPBT, and 130gr Berger Hybrid OTM Gold Medal Match.

Hornady just added 123gr ELD-M Black Line.

Then you have Wolf steel case, which I just saw has dropped down to 22 cents per.

Technically the answer is actually .243WSSM from Dtech. But it is basically single stack. So if you mean doublestack, then the .22 Grendel.
