machinist friend of mine and I are interested in developing our our own can for .308.

how does one go about it legally?

im interested in theory harmonics, sound suppression, poi, accuracy

plus i'd like to see any arm chair designs

Re: can devlopment ?

Go look at silencertest.com I am working on building my own cans right now, starting with a .22lr and moving up from there.
I am using the form 1 method. You can find alot of info by seaching "Form 1 silencer".
Good luck

Re: can devlopment ?

First you must obtain a type 7 manufacturers FFL then once that is in hand you resubmit with another 500.00 for your class 3 manufacturers which allows you do make supressors without having to pay the tax stamp on each one. The class three is paid on a june to june basis. To pay for one now which you probably wouldnt have in hand until march or april then you would only get a couple months out of it then you would have to pay again for next year. They dont prorate it. As said above silencertest is a very knowledgable sight and alot of people share their cad designs. Its not rocket science more like voodoo. Its easy to get one to work. Its voodoo to get one that works good in a small and light package.

Re: can devlopment ?

You can build a can without having a class 3 FFL by filing a Form 1 , that allows you to make one can for your personal use. , file all the proper paperwork pay your $200 tax stamp and when it all comes back you can start building.

More Harmonics are bad for accuracy as well as noise so you want as little movement as possible

Suppressions comes from the slowing and cooling of the gasses before then exit , you want alot of turbulance in your can for better suppression

POI will be greater the bigger and heavier the suppressor is do to changing the harmonices of the barrel.

generaly a well built suppressor will tighten groups as the reduces the vibrations in the barrel from adding so much mass.

A form one is ok if you just want to build one. He stated he wanted to develope a can. This leads me to think he wants to build more than one. A form one is also limited to the physical dimentions you list on the papers. You can not make it any larger or longer. You could play with baffel designs but that is about it. It is a pain. I have done it a few times. You have to destroy all the parts before you start new ones. It is also one of those grey areas where I dont like to go. If you want to build one for personal use yep form one. If you are wanting to test designs for a buisness venture 500 dollar FFL is better than prison.

Re: can devlopment ?

yea your exactly right.

For the price of some of the cans on the market today I'm not sure it would be worth it to get the manufactures FFl and $200 for each one you make. But maybe I guess.

I have form 1'ed several myself , I make mine strictly for sound reduction so a bit more size isin't an issure for me so I make the dimentions on the for pretty liberal.

Their are ALOT of grey areas and I think its left up to the discretion of the agent more than anything , its funny how you can call them with one question and talk to 3 differant agents and get three differant answeres

OH well the maybe ive been wasting money , i was under the impression that they all had the be taxed.
thanks for the heads up Jason

Re: can devlopment ?

Not 100% sure this is accurate , its from another site but several folks I know that know alot about suppressors say that looks to be a very very good guess

1.HTG Eureka 5.56mm
2. HTG Aris 5.56mm
3. HTG Universal .22 cal
4. KAC SR25 7.62mm
5. KAC Navy 9mm
6. Gemtech M4-96D 5.56mm
7. Costal ???
8. SWR Wolverine 5.56mm
9. AAC Scar SD 5.56mm
10. SRT Hurricane 5.56mm
11. Gemtech M4-96C 5.56mm
12. AAC M4-2000 5.56mm or M4-1000 ,M4-2000 07'models???
13. KAC NT4 5.65mm
14. Gemtech Trinity LID 9mm
15. AAC Evo 9 9mm
16. Gemtech Raptor 3LUG 9mm
17. Brugger &Thomet 9mm

As for the "crown" on the suppressor , I have seen some that had some pretty nasty dings in them making exit hole look like a figure 8 and they still shot great , I think that by the time the bulet gets to the end of the suppressor the gas that would have tried to jet out past the bullet will have been slowed down dramiticaly , enough so to allow the bullet to escape well ahead of the gas that may have "kicked" it off of is axis and blown accuracy.
Hell alot of supperssors have their baffle's hole deliberatly cut at and angle or with big notches in them to cause more turbulance in each chamber , so I think that once the bullet passes the first baffle its pretty much well ahead of any gass that might have messed up its accuracy
