i have a CZ 550 Varmint Laminated as pictured below... i'd like the stock to have a more vertical grip to it, and i'm wondering if it is possible to have the stock modified with either a thumbhole, or a deeper thumb recess.

I know there are replacement stocks out there, but i don't have the $400-800 to spend on one, so i'm hoping you can suggest a way to have it altered.

Re: Can Laminate Stock Be modified?

Short answer yes.

Long answer:
Thumbhole option I would say no. It will never look right without a lot of sanding and woodworking ability.

More vertical grip, You can take down the curved part up by the bottom metal. My issue there would be strength in the pistol grip area. The better option would be Filler. But this would require painting the stock a solid color. Fill it with Marine text to your liking, sand and fill and paint!

Deeping the pistol grip would be the easiest one. Just take some course sand paper 80 to 120 grit and start sanding where you want material removed tell it fits. Then start with 200 grit and move up to 600 and finish. I would sand the rest of the stock down with 400 grit and move to 600.

For the finish. I would seal it with a sandable sealer and re-sand, and then finish with what ever you want. Solid color just shoot it. IF you want to see the Laminate would I recommend a auto clear coat. Might be able to talk a local body shop to shoot it while doing a car. Should cost $50. Make sure they put 8 -15 coats on it for durability.
