Well I picked up an Armalite AR10A4 20" and now the only thing I can't decide on is which glass to go with:

Nikon M-308 4-16x42 Nikoplex
Leupold Mark4 4.5-14x40 LRT

I'm probably looking at shooting at around 700yds. I've been leaning a little more towards the Nikon(mainly because of price) but I don't want to miss out on a good thing with the Leupold if it is worth spending a little extra on.

Anyone have experience with any or preferably both?

Yea the Nikon is in the $500s while the Leupold is in the $700s so the money really isn't tooooo important but just to justify spending the extra on something that "appears" to be the same on its face. Overall though, with Nikon, normally are they pretty good scopes? Or second rate compared to Leupold?

only nikon ive owned was a M223, and it had amazingly clear glass and seemed to be built well. I just didnt need it (got it in a trade) so i traded it to a buddy that could use it

Nikon pros;
-fantastic glass. Seriously.
-price
- 1 inch tube, cheaper rings

cons;
-one inch tube, only 40 MOA total elevation adjustment. BUT, does come with a 20MOA mount. How good of quality that mount is..who knows.
-calibrated turrets are a personal preference thing, with most people not liking them. (Nothing a piece of masking tape around it with MOA markings can't fix...but then, why buy a scope with a feature you don't like?)

Leupold pros;
- good glass
-100 moa adjustment range

con's;
-price

I am a huge Nikon fan...when it comes to my hunting rifles. They have amazing glass for the price...but lack other features. I'm assuming, since you didn't ask for other scope opinions, that you only want one of those two? If the money isn't an issue, and you're not a fan of calibrated turrets, then you'll like the Mk4. Great, proven. If you decide the money is a selling point, the Nikon will be a good scope, but without a 20moa mount it'll be iffy getting you to 700 (depending on ammo, your gun, and how lucky you are with the adjustment center is when mounting.)

Actually I was gonna send the Leupold back to get calibrated turrets lol, so theres a little more money involved with that. I currently use a Leupold VX 3x9 on my FNAR for hunting and it works great. I just really want something for long range steel plate banging that could also use for hunting. But from what im reading the mount could be the breaking point. I was really looking into a nice QD mount such as Larue etc.

Re: Can't decide which of these I want, Leupold/Nikon?

Get the MK4 OR get a VXIII LR, similar scope just a bit cheaper. The nice thing with leupy's if you decide you want to change reticle or adjustments later all you have to do is send it back. I know some here dont have much love for the leupy's but the 4.5-14 is my current fav. hunting scope. Especially with the TMR ret.

Re: Can't decide which of these I want, Leupold/Nikon?

I use mark 4 on all my hunting rigs because they have great glass are light weight compared to other tactical scopes and also I have never had any problems with tracking. +1 leupy

Re: Can't decide which of these I want, Leupold/Nikon?

I really love hunting with my Leupold as well. Yea so i'm starting to lean a little more towards the Leupold, which is what I wanted from the get go, just was second guessing myself. I will probably have the same issue when I go get a another scope for my rifle length AR15, Nikon M223 or Leupold Mark AR lol.

Leupold will probably sell faster and for more money in a resale if you decide you don't like it. Their customer service is also really good.
