i'm buying either a new savage or new tikka as a christmas present to myself after new years but i can't decide what caliber. i have a 30-06 already so i was thinking a short action and have been going back and forth over the 6.5 or 7 for like 8 months now.

original plan was a 6.5 cm then i started thinking 260 because of brass availability, then started thinking about the 6.5 slr since the brass was so easy to make but the whole time i was always drooling over the ballistics of the 7's

so make up my mind for me. my only requirement is it has to be a short action caliber and i guess i'll narrow it abit more by saying no fireforming but an easily modified existing round is fine and only 6.5 or 7's. the stock barrel won't stay long with whichever manufacturer i go with so don't worry about that

Re: can't decide

Why not both? Get a Savage in 260 or 6.5CM and then get an extra barrel in a 7mm, I suggest a 7RSAUM for a short action. Then you can go back and forth whenever you like, since switching barrels on a savage is easy and takes about 5 minutes to change.

Re: can't decide

for hauling around the hills, Tikka hands down! Can't wait to get mine. Just my opinion. For range work I have no clue which would be better.

Caliber: 7mm-08 (?). I'm biased, as that's what I'm going with for brass availability, bullets galore, etc. but your other choices are obviously fine. If there was a five sided coin you could just flip it and take whatever comes up. They all work great. Only tie breaker may be whatever has the best barrel life.

Re: can't decide

Tikka's quality is second to none. And, so is the accuracy, come to think of it. Just my personal opinion.

hmm was hoping more would chime in with their thoughts but then again i guess this subject has been beat to death but i still can't seem to decide...guess i have another month or so to try and figure this out

this will mainly be range gun since i already have the 30-06 for hunting but i want something a little cheaper to feed then the 30-06
