I recently had a light buld turn on in my head and I realized I hate my cell phone. So instead of a cell phone I now have a pager!! Now you have the option to talk to who you want while not being interupted from what you are doing.

I simply put my Samsung Solstice on "Reject All Calls" then it just goes directly to my voicemail where I tell the caller they reached my pager and to leave a numeric page or a voicemail.

Me personally, I love the idea because if it is important they will leave a message, or if someone I actually know needs me they can always text a message directly to me. Not sure if that makes me a bad person because I don't want to talk to people or not (I think not) but it seems that the cell phones are being hit with BS telemarketers more and more and I am tired of scrambeling for my phone ringing and not catching it or being rude to other people in person (count the times you see that happen in a day) and answering the phone without excusing myself if it is an important call.

I am an "old man" at heart but thought I would relay this little nugget that makes me feel easier. And helps defeat the trendy, gotta have my cellphone all the time mindset of the USA general population.

Your opinion?

Re: Cell Phones

People I know and want to talk to have distinctive ringtones, so I answer those, if it's convenient. With other people, I look at the caller ID. If it's someone I don't want to talk to, I hit the button twice to send it straight to voicemail. And sometimes the ringer is just turned off.

What's that like?

Re: Cell Phones

Here's my opinion, as a teenager. My cell phone is constantly on silent or vibrate. Mainly because ringtones annoy me. If someone wants me, they can text me. Normally, I can answer immediately that way. If someone calls and I'm available, I answer. If not, I don't and they can leave a message. I just don't give annoying people my number, except my mother.

Re: Cell Phones

Im probably 2x your age but I do the same thing though never on silent. I had a pager up until afew years ago and moved to a cellphone since it got harder to find pager carriers.
I dont like really care for a cell phone but its handy at times. It becomes a nuisance when you give it to people you really dont care to talk to

Re: Cell Phones

Unfortunately my cell phone calls are mostly for work, which means that I have it on me at all times. But my phone has an easy to press reject call button which sends it directly to voicemail, which is where most of my work calls go, LOL. I do also hate cell phones especially when the wife is blowing it up every 5 minutes, but they sure do come in handy when you really need them.

Re: Cell Phones

The handy when you need them, is the reason I still have one now, I am only 26 (prime Iphone target market) I do have people that accquire my personal cell phone number from work.

My main reason for doing this is that I am not "on call" and I am not using a company provided cell phone. Most of Heavy Equipment related phone calls almost always involve some sort of free advise being given....but the whole socially demanding mindset of being available 24/7 sucks a whole lot.

Lightbulbs? I get some good ones!!! Most of them I chock up to growing up mentally and realizing that there is way more to life than being available and supportive to others....like I said....a lightbulb.

Re: Cell Phones

I carry my phone 24/7. When I am on call for the hospital I answer hospital calls immediately. I always answer my parents immediately because you never know when it is going to be the notification call, you know? My parents are 80 and 85.
The ringer I set to vibrate when I am with other people, in church, seeing patients in the office. Otherwise I leave it on. When I am not on call I turn it off.
Where I live there are no pagers anymore, and voicemail has no number option, only a voice message.

I perfectly understand your approach and agree with it.

Oh man, if I had an iPhone, I'd never put it down. I love those things. I have an iPod Touch that I always have. When I don't have my computer, iPod Touch to the rescue, as long as I can find a connection. I admit that I am "wired" like the rest of my generation.

Re: Cell Phones

I keep my phone on vibrate or low ring, like some of the previous posters - it annoys me and discourteous to others. My work calls me at my phone as well, so I have my work's main number and staffs' in my cell so I can screen the calls. Otherwise, if I don't recognize the number I don't pick it up, if it's important enough, they will leave a message.

I remember reading this passage somewhere long time ago: "the phone is for the convenience of the receiver, not the caller." I guess, it's one of the reason they invented phone machines and VM.

And I agree with Minx, text is more faster and easier to respond to, unless it's something very important then you switch to voice.

But with today's technology, a cellphone can be a very handy and useful tool - from GPS, Internet, directory and etc. on top of the usual voice and text.
