Actually, Lee was not pro-slavery. His plantation owned slaves, yes, but he was not a radical pro-slavery man and was not for secession. He opposed it vehemently as an officer in the United States Army. He was offered command of the whole Union Army at the onset of hostilities. He turned it down, offering his services not to the Confederacy, but to Virginia. Lee was pro-Virginia. He was not an abolitionist or an anti-abolitionist.
And to rekindle a discussion we had here a few weeks ago, the Civil War was ignited by slavery. It was not about slavery. It was about secession and about the power of the federal government vs. rights of states. And as one person put it very well in the earlier discussion, it was not about the morality of slavery at its outset, but about the economics of slavery. The only way to make Southern agriculture and cotton (the most important crop in America at that time... for the USA AND the mills of England) was with the slavery economic model. Changing that meant economic ruin for the South, but also for the mills of England and New England. The 'moral' side of abolition was a small and radical band of people on a crusade. The bigger picture, as always, was economics and political power.
The Civil War only became about abolition when Lincoln saw that the stopping succession 'cause' was too nebulous and that the North was getting war-weary. So to energize the population, the move to 'remake' the Civil War as a crusade for abolition was launched. It sparked massive riots in the North, BTW. And large numbers of Federal Troops (including whole regiments) deserted because they would not fight for abolition. They were fighting for Union. However revisionist history and memory have all (pardon the term) whitewashed the slaughter to make it a noble cause and to try and show how much better a country we are... because the 'winning side' won for their love of abolition. Mule Puckey. But it makes for a great high-school textbook, an outstanding sound bite and a great way to turn slaughter into nobility. The real causes, as with the causes for most wars, are so complex that they are still being analyzed and written about. And will be for hundreds more years.
Back to Lee... I think he would have been happy to know that free Americans (and free Virginians) of all persuasions were enjoying life in the shadow of his monument. Though I daresay... he probably did not want monuments to himself. I don't think any were erected while he was alive. Though I have no proof of that. He was not a self-aggrandizing man.
Moreover, Lee was not a racist. Lee was a stateist. And when it came to picking his sides, he put Virginia before Washington.
I think it was Shelby Foote who had one of the best observations about what the Civil War was fought about. He said "Before the war, we said 'The United States are' and after the war, we said 'the United States is.' To my earlier comment... that's what part of the problem seems to be today. Political Rhetoric is not about 'The United States IS" but about "what each identity-politics group" is... Until we can get back to a population that recognizes that a rising tide lifts all boats... and that you can't lift some boats and not others... then hard rain's a gonna fall. USA was meant to be a big tent. Today everyone wants their own little yurt.

Maggot... In about the middle of the Civil War, not long after Lincoln and the War Cabinet instituted a draft, the leader of the Quaker Church sought an audience with Lincoln. His purpose was to ask that Lincoln recognize the Quaker religion as exempt from draft. His response was that "We need legions of men like you." But he granted the Quakers their exemption.
Keep the faith. I think this storm will pass. And for those old enough to remember the first months of Reagan's tenure (including the assassination attempt, the media outrage and the fear over pending nuclear exchange (we had that Sword of Damocles hanging over us then), it turned out pretty well. We're 200 days in...
Things will settle out. Not without bumps. But Charlottesville will survive. Be stronger for it. And the fact that guys like you didn't go hunting... is, IMHO, proof that cooler heads will prevail.

I'll respectfully disagree... This brilliant little Illinois Nazi Blues Brother story line utterly destroyed the image of the late 1970's Nazi Party in the USA. The bund thought they were on a huge roll after their Skokie (sp?) court case and as they rode the wave of late 1970's survivalist silliness. Yes, they re-emerged in the 1990's as the militia movement. And keep showing up from time-to-time as in yesterday at Charlottesville. But the whole "American Bund" dress up as Brown Shirts turned into a giant joke thanks to Jake and Elwood. And most of these morons are so fringe as to be laughable today.
The Blues Brothers movie used utter humor and biting sarcasm to completely de-fang these fruitbats. I mean... sitting in an office painting an eagle? Driving a Pinto? "Gruppenfuhrer... get the license?" "I always Loved You" as the Pinto plows into the ground? Every time you turned around in that movie, they were making fun of the movement... and eviscerating it all at once.
There is so much humor and satire to be found in these Antifa moonbats. Ways to go yet before it hits the fan. When it does it will be ugly even by my standards. Many are going to get physics, chemical, an kinetic energy lessons of the first kind. Guns, night vision an the like will be so old school. Be very careful about where an the ink you hunt. Embedding is a very real tactic.
And that would have been the end of the Union. If there had not been major victories by Grant and Sherman in summer of 1864, Lincoln would have lost the election to McLellan who would have negotiated a succession with the CSA. That was Davis (and Lee's) strategy. Keep things going long enough to get the British involved (they had major economic ties to the South to keep their fabric mills running). After Gettysburg and Vicksburg (which everyone forgets happened the same weekend), the British had no interest in supporting the Confederacy. They could see the writing on the wall.
Davis and Lee wanted to drag things on for another year to defeat Lincoln in the 1864 election... the North was War Weary and a huge number of people just wanted it to end. If Atlanta had not fallen... and Grant had not all but 'owned' the Shenandoah at that point... Lincoln would have likely lost and the Northern Democrats and Copperheads would have ended the war through negotiations with a divided North and South. .
Mtn is right on with Lee's conventional strategy simply failing due to time. He lacked the resources for a conventional war... but he came very, very close!

Not being omniscient... I am probably on shaky ground here. But I think they believed they would prevail. At the negotiating table. And that they would move things to negotiations after a couple of quick, pageant-like battles that would be fun to watch. And in that regard, they came close in 1864. But Lincoln was too entrenched and would not let the Union dissolve. And Davis and his cabinet never understood that.
As a war of attrition... yup. Everyone knew it. It just took 4 years and a lot of blood. But noone saw that coming.
You could say the same of WW1. Home for Christmas Boys... why does that refrain echo in every war?

Don’t get me wrong I am sure without out slavery or war he was a fine Honorable man. But we must remember he chose to be on the wrong side of history.
