Question, I am playing around with hornady 140 eldm and 147’s. Seems like my ruger 6.5cm in the 24” likes the 147’s better as of 100yd testing on a 40° day. My question is, if there isn’t really that much of a difference in the 2 sizes and I want to shoot out past 1000yds would I be better using the 140 over the 147 since it a little faster out the gate?

This is the chrono data I have collected so far on my .308.

The gun is a Rem 700 5R SS Gen 2 with 20" barrel (who makes up these silly long names)

The ELD-X is pretty consistent...particularly for factory "hunting" ammo, I believe.

Average across the below ELD-X data groups; ES = 36 and SD = 12

The FGMM is pretty dang good for target ammo and my gun seems to like it.

Average ES = 55 and SD = 16

Can't really say much about the Nosler. I didn't arm the Labradar at the start (duh...sigh) and only have 6 data points. But, consistent or not, my .308 didn't seem to really like it all that much. Not bad, but not the best.

And here is what I have for my 6.5 CM with a 25" Proof Research SS barrel with 7.5 twist.

Note the numbers on the side which compare published on the box MV with what I found. My very vague and general understanding is that many ammo manf use 24" barrels as a standard length for MV measurements. But, I'm a bit hard pressed to attribute the delta's to the additional 1" of my barrel. Maybe I just have a fast barrel.....however, Berger is almost spot on.

I would dearly love to shoot some more of that Berger 140 hybrid match. I only had a box of it and either it shot very well or I was shooting well that day. I would like to run more of it and see if consistency on target and low ES & SD stay reasonably constant to what I have found so far. But try finding the stuff right now (yeah, thanks COVID and Biden and fuck both of you haha)

I was able to get a 500 round case of the Fed Premium Berger Hybrid 135's. The one box I have shot so far of that stuff played very nicely with my rifle but its only one box so who knows yet.

It’s been my experience that the 147 does better at 1000+. My gun shoots the 147’s at roughly .4-.5 and the 140’s at .7-.8ish. The 140’s and 147’s are almost identical in MV ( factory Hornady loading). The very slight MV advantage the 140’s have fade away pretty quickly and the 147’s do much better at 1000+.

As you can see all were significantly slower than advertised with the Federal and Hornady being closest to "As advertised".

All 4 shot 1" or better 3rd groups at 100 yards. BOTH Win and Fed 64 shot the same POI. The Hornady was within an inch and the Win BST was 2" high (and 300+fps faster)

I've run the Hornady Superformance to 475 yards with my 1-6x BDC to learn my holds and it was very, VERY consistent. I was shocked at the deviation in velocity BUT it could be a fluke from a small set of data. Ive now put nearly 100 rounds of this through my AR with great results-and a very small POI shift when suppressed.

TERMINAL- The Hornady is the only one of the four that I have tried on game--The 73gr ELDM absolutely crushed my biggest free range buck left a fantastic, Stevie Wonder bloodtrail for 30 yards-- 200 yard shot (impact velocity around 2350fps and 875ft/lbs) I then smoked two small 75lb pigs on the way out both of which were headshot and DRT @ 25 yards.
