what do u guys use to clean ur ar,i use butches bore shine on everything but im about out of it,was at walmart and picked up some gun scrubber which im going to use as a degreaser not a cleaner was wondering if anyone uses this to get the carbon build up off their bolt and the rifle in general, and how often do u guys take down the rifle and fully clean it

Re: cleaning ar 15

hops9 swab wait 2 mins then barrel brass brush wait(this is to allow the hops to work, then swab clean till no black. then look if lands are good then swab 1 more with bore shine or something that will last for a wile (depending on time to be stored), if not clean repeat prosses

Re: cleaning ar 15

I am a longtime fan of Hoppe's. I especially like it for soaking/softening carbon at the tail end of the AR's bolt.

For bores, I like the Gunslick foaming bore cleaner. I think it's very effective and may cut down on bore wear from cleaning rod useage. I think it allows fewer passes through the bore overall; and I seldem feel any need to employ a brush when I'm using it.

Re: cleaning ar 15

i was looking at my brake and seen some green stuff on the crown im assuming that it is carbon build up how would i go about getting it off there i would assume that a qtip would work but i dont know how cacked it is on there

Re: cleaning ar 15

For the BCG I run it wet. Once I'm done shooting I can either re lube or clean. When you keep it wet you don't have to work hard at the carbon, more our les wipe off.
I've gotten to the point where I clean my barrel almost never any more. Any good solvent, patch and brush combo should do you good with barrel. I use shooters choice for solvent when I do clean mine.
Gun scrubber works well but make sure and put a coat of oil on afterwards.
Good luck

Re: cleaning ar 15

try to use a non-amonia cleaner if your cleaning the barrel so It wont pit your chrome lining. Lubrication is the key even in my piston gun out of habit I still put a few drops of lube, can't hurt and it's easier to clean when the carbon is not dry and crusted on your BCG. Alot of people swear by mobil 1. Never tried it myself but coming from motorcycle racing automotive oil has a bunch of additives and conditioners that might react funky to the metal of your AR. I would use a synthetic 4 stroke motorcycle oil like Amsiol if I went the motor oil route.

Re: cleaning ar 15

First, There are a few things you might do so the bcg cleans easier. I like poslished parts and I hate any other gimmick finishes. Porosity breeds grime.
Degrease the parts.
Apply a dry lube.
Apply grease especially to the extractor pin, spring, rings, lugs, buffer spring, carrier rails and bolt tail. A mere film is adequate. Too much is when lube gets on the round below the carrier in the magazine.
Oil is for vaginas, and for guns when there's nothing else, or if grease use is a grave sin to you. Then use cheap, synthetic 90w gear oil. In a bind, any liquid is better than running an AR dry. Synthetic is always better.
Then, after firing the AR, everytime, clean it. Stubborn carbon will not accumulate when the gun is treated right.\
Good shooting.

dont know what the brake is made of,the gun is a stag model 3, i took some qtips and tried to get the stuff out but it doesnt seem to work cant post a pic, ill try later with some hoppes and a qtip hope it will work

Re: cleaning ar 15

as far as cleaning goes i clean my ar every time it gets shot, which is why the green stuff kinda shocks me i dont whant to use something that will scratch the crown of the rifle so im going to try the hoppes with a qtip later tonight

Re: cleaning ar 15

If it's green it sounds like copper carbonate. If you are just pushing patches through to the muzzle every time you clean some of the liquid can pool there under the FH or brake.

Re: cleaning ar 15

That greenish blue stuff comes right out of mine with Hoppe's, usually with little more effort than cleaning the bore, sometimes I take a brush to the flashhider if there's allot. I clean (brush, carbon scraper, Hoppe's) and lube (CLP) the BCG when it occurs to me its been a while, most times I'll patch the bore then too, I used copper remover last summer after 4000 or so rounds, got allot out, didn't really change the accuracy, waste of time with a chrome lined bore my rifle.

Re: cleaning ar 15

For cleaning the barrel , nothing in my experience comes close to the results of Wipeout brand cleaner . For the bolt , some Hoppes cause I like the smell , and them Mobil 1 synthetic grease

Re: cleaning ar 15

Hoppes no. 9 is what I've always used. Readily available and does the job very well... Plus using it to soak the bcg is also effective.

Re: cleaning ar 15

i called stag and asked what they would recomend, they said clp or hoppes #9,so what is the difference between buthces and hoppes they both have amonia in them

Re: cleaning ar 15

Everyone has their own flavor of cleaning products based on what works for them. I would suggest getting a sample of a few different ones, maybe from friends or small bottles and finding what you like.

For me, I mix a little Kroil with Butch's (80/20) and that works great for me. But I also run barrels that seem to clean up easy.
