I keep reading where everyone recommends a bore guide or their barrel will suffer.
I did order a bore guide for my Remington 700 5r, however it was defective and I could not use it.
I had planned to go shoot this new gun today and had my day planned out and then the bore guide was useless. I said what the heck, how much damage can running a patch a few times through the barrel really do without a bore guide.
So I cleaned it with my tipton carbon fiber rod and made sure to wipe the carbon fiber rod down before inserting it. I also tried my best to keep the rod centered, however I am sure I did not keep it perfect.
I also made another mistake and didn't order a long enough cleaning rod so I had to lift the the rod up for like an inch so the handle would clear the tip of the rifle stock. I did not realize I needed a rod long enough as the stock needs to also be cleared. However, I do not think lifting it that small amount would make the rod rub on anything, however, the rod would be slightly angled for a small amount of travel to get the patch to the end of the barrel.
So my question is, how much damage did I do to my rifle? Will my accuracy suck now?
It is hard to believe how running a rod through when 99% of the time it is probably not touching anything can do damage. But I am curious if that was a really bad idea?
