I tried to get my Mosin's bore clean and finally resigned myself to the fact that it would never get clean. It shot great though....

Re: Cleaning Solutions For The Gunk From Hell!

If you're trying to clean cosmo off a gun and out of a wood stock, get a gallon or two of mineral spirits aka charcoal lighter aka parts washing solvent. It's about the safest solvent you can use and it's what is used in auto shop parts cleaners. Bee-bop down to the local Home Despot, it's in the paint isle. Then, head on over to the wall paper department and grab a wall paper tray, the disposable ones are fine if you're careful.

Now you've got a way to soak an entire action (most) or an entire stock and in some cases an entire rifle. Put your parts in it, cover with mineral spirits and let them soak for a while. Cover the tray with foil or you can make a cardboard lid, just something to help control evaporation. Take a paintbrush etc. and clean your parts.

Pour the dirty spirits in another container and save them for next time. Most of the gunk will settle out and you can decant off the clean spirits. When they get too nasty, dispose with used motor oil at your local auto supply place or recyclers.

Now if you are trying to remove carbon, well, I have a top secret formula that I use for that.....

Re: Cleaning Solutions For The Gunk From Hell!

I went through the same ordeal with a 1903A1 Springfield. After pretty much a whole day of cleaning without the bore being clean it became a matter of pride & principle for me. The long drawn out process that worked me was to scrub out the crude in layers. I think the hardest part of the crude to get rid of was the tar sealant used on the bullets. New bronze brushes and kerosene will get rid of the layers of carbon/tar & copper fouling. I have one of the Outer's Foul Out devices. That works quite well on the powder & copper fouling. It is/was a rather labor intensive process what it pays off in the end. As the layers are removed the under laying layers seem to soften which makes it easier to remove.

I will give mineral spirits a go, seems like it would be a good strong solution, although I am mostly working on the action and the bore i will be needing to get the gunk out of the stock when i refinish the stock, Thank you for the advise, any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Cleaning Solutions For The Gunk From Hell!

For wood stocks that I'm going to give a refinishing job to I use "Purple Power" and extremely hot water.

I have a 3 foot tall tube with a cap on the end that I fill about 50% up with boiling water. I put in a full cup of concentrated Purple Power and stir it for a second, then dip the stock for about 45-60s.

Flip it over, dip the other side, wipe it down.

The 185*F + water gets the cosmo and oils to slough out of the wood and open the pores up. If you don't want to refinish the stock this is probably not the approach you want to go with though.

After 2 applications of this method I've had numerous old Mosin/Mauser/Swiss K's that were ready for a light sanding and tung oil or linseed oil again.

You can do the same thing with metal parts to get all the crap out of the crevises, but make sure you spray it down well with oil afterwards.

WipeOut in the bore does wonders and I always take the bolt, trigger and little removable metal parts apart and put them in the ultra-sonic for half an hour or so.

Re: Cleaning Solutions For The Gunk From Hell!

I am an auto mechanic and the hot water parts washers (giant dishwasher)in most shops work fantastic for cosmoline. I did all my ak47 kits and magizines in it. It takes 15-20 minutes and spotless. Just make sure you hose off the parts immediatly as some tanks have mildly caustic cleaners added. Also oil parts right away or they can flash rust a little. It is the easiest way I have found to clean surplus parts/guns

Re: Cleaning Solutions For The Gunk From Hell!

thank u for all the help, i gave mineral spirits a go but it did not do the job to its needed extent. I tried foaming degreaser and it was the strong solution I needed but the parts needed to be cleaned again afterward but worked amazingly for the thick stuff, now I have been scrubbing with a stainless brush with simplegreen for all the light stuff.
Thank you all for your input!
Sincerely,

+1 one on the parts washer, big dishwasher, for cosmoline. I cleaned a couple sks in one. Oil everything up when your done. It will pull the oil out very well.
Vineger works well on carbon. Carb cleaner. Hot water pressure washer works well. I use wipe out patch and wipe out accelorator with a nylon brush on bores. Been the best stuff for me. I am not a fan of spending most of my time cleaning my guns.
