[h=2]Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) is pushing gun control after poor federal reporting helped Texas killer Devin Kelley pass a background check to obtain his rifle.[/h]
Kelley used that rifle to kill 26 people on November 5, when he opened fire on congregants of First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

On November 6 Breitbart News reported that Kelley passed a background check for this rifle. Hours after that report we learned that he was able to pass the check because the Air Force had “mishandled” the task of reporting his domestic violence arrest and conviction to the National Instant Background Check System (NICS).

NPR‘s Tom Bowman reported the “Air Force Office of Special Investigations at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico” had dropped the ball. Holloman is “where Kelley was serving when he was arrested” for “assaulting his then-wife and stepson.”

This error to report is a clear mistake and the Air Force is investigating how it happened. And while they do that, Sen. Cornyn is pushing gun control.

According to the Washington Times, Cornyn is one of a small number of Republicans who believe “there is room for a limited gun control debate” at this time. He is drafting a bill aimed at “[reminding] government agencies of their duty to provide information to the background check system.”

Government agencies should certainly report, but do we need another gun law in order to secure such reporting?

We need accountability for those who did not follow the existing law, not more laws to be ignored without consequences.

Yep, if you put those responsible for reporting this that failed in their duties in prison for negligence it would send a warning shot. We have a system, it has a much better chance of working if everyone does their job. Air Force should have to sale a couple F-35"s to pay some damages.

Many Laws are used to enslave people, by proxy.
Many Laws are used to make money for the revenue agent or his employer, some by quota.
Many Laws are used to divide people

A criminal is one who does not obey the law,
Many people are now choosing to becoming criminals, do to double standards.
Most all gun laws are in reality, crimes against the 2A of the COTUS

Ok, I was fairly certain a dishonorable by itself prohibits firearm purchase, not to mention the other stuff. I thought he was dishonorably discharged? Maybe I heard wrong.
Regardless, I agree with one of the previous posters, how does the Air Force failure to report become a need for new or more laws?
When current laws are not enforced how can new ones help?
Man I am tired of congress in general. They seem to be a solution in search of a problem.
Something happens, run to a damn microphone or camera and spout platitudes or divisive b.s. What ever happened to really finding out what happened, analyzing why and how and planning how to prevent it again?
Its all about posturing and poll results. I'd tell them call me but I probably wouldn't answer.

His discharge did prohibit him from have guns. The Air Force never told anyone about it. If it isn't in the computer he can't be denied.

You are getting rabbit holed, he could have gotten the exact same guns he had wither on or off the government approved list to exercise his rights. There should be no background check,

The root issue is mental illness, no law would have done anything about the root issue. Until we as a nation acknowledge this country has a mental illness issue, the laws will stack up against the solid folks of this country to the point of gun confiscation, which is what the end games is about! Quit pointing fingers an beating a dead horse, that just plays into their game plan.

We are addressing mental illness....we are putting them in the military now!!!lol Since we import terrorists...can't we export mental ill people who want to kill? I can think of a few places to send them!

My fucking God. he did not get a dishonorable discharge.
It was a fucking bad conduct discharge, two different things.
He was convicted of a domestic violence charge that should have been entered into the national crime information center database.

Yeah. I guess they wanted a slam-bang and didn't want to press for dishonorable. And then they fucked the paperwork up. Makes you wonder how many time bombs are out there. And then throw the Army's decision to reduce standards in on top of that ...

My understanding is that was reversed yesterday, or day before? The person responsible for that was not authorized to do it, according to what I got out of the story.

He was Air Force. They supposedly screen them better than us grunts. But yeah, trying to "low key" the whole thing is what made it slip through the cracks.

Also, no one is being really clear if this happened on base or not? You can't blame the system if they never got the chance to do their job correctly. What was his MOS that wound him up so bad?

It was a general observation about the quality of recruits across the forces.

I'm not sure what within Logistics Readiness (his squadron at Holloman) would have done anything to twist him up. As I understand it, it's fixing stuff, storing stuff, issuing stuff, moving stuff, and sometimes doing airframe cargo loading. We had people at UPS (yeah, I was on the ramp/flightline) who had done this in USAF. I don't think this guy saw too much and lost it. He was a mess going in.

since when is it the military's job to screen MFers for the civilans? He is a goddam criminal, the local cops seem to have missed even more so called flags, but mostly its his goddam trash family that needs to be held accountable since he is dead already. I am not willing to give any government people the power to say who and who shouldn't own a gun, they cant be trusted as they have proven time after time in the recent past to respect citizens rights. You want the same government that burned 80 kids to death while trying to arrest a wack job for having a SBR in Waco to say who and who cant have a gun, fuck that.

I'd ask where you're getting that from, but you jump to conclusions like a funny car hopping off the line.

I aint jumping to any conclusions. the MFers family knew he had mental issues and did nothing,

Well, if you'd sharpen up your writing a bit, you wouldn't confuse the fuck out of us. Between you and Gunfighter I'm eyeing up that pint of bourbon that I use for cooking.

Army,

I meant screening him when he went into the Air Force.
I was 11B in the Army. When I got my A&P, I had thought about going Air NG. During that process they screened the shit outta' me in comparison to what it took to even get my top secret clearance.
