I was wondering if you could convert a Stock remington 700 long action from 300 RUM (what i have now) into a 338 RUM, say i burned out the barrel (very likely) and i want the 338 RUM can that be done?

I was wondering the same thing about converting a 700 LA .270win to .300wm. I believe the bolt is different, but what about the receiver/action?

You'll be fine using that action. The smith will just have to open up the bolt face from .473 to .532. You could also trade bolts with someone that has a 700 of a similar vintage.
