copper fouling

Re: copper fouling

You might also consider that if this is a factory barrel, the bore finish leaves much to be desired. A few years ago I started using Tubbs fire-lapping system on my barrels. Some, it has actually improved the accuracy, but mostly they shoot well longer and clean up much easier. I would recommend it on all factory barrels.

My Remmington Barrel did the same. It gets better after 100 rounds, better still at 200 rounds, and by 600 rounds it hardly picks up any copper.

Last weekend I did 50 rounds, and the rifle cleaned up with only 6 patches. Mop the bore with Hoppes #9. Leave it for 3-5 hours. Push a patch. Mop the bore. Wait overnight. Push a patch. Mop the bore, wait til lunch. Push 2 patches--done cleaning--push an oiled patch.

Re: copper fouling

its an old gun. i was refering to after shooting just 20-30 rounds, the barrel has a bit of copper in it. my other barrels dont have any after that and many more shots.

Same question as 427Cobra. Do you loose accuracy? If not, don't worry about it. Keep shooting it until you see your accuracy sour. My Kreiger 1:8.5 in 6.5x47 Lapua has 900+ rounds down the tube; last 700+ without cleaning. Still shooting .2 to .75 MOA, all day, every day!

Re: copper fouling

What GSSP said. FWIW, the best copper removers I've tried are Boretech Eliminator and KG-12. Neither of those stink (no ammonia) and work better than any other cleaners cluttering up my shelf. Either of these will get the copper out of my Windrunner in just a few passes. I only get 200 rounds down range before I have to clean, dang it!

Re: copper fouling

it loses no accuracy. was just curious about the fouling because none of my others seem to foul so quickly. that was all. thanks for the quick responces.

Re: copper fouling

My brother's old Rem700 30-06 will shoot sub moa with bare 180 gr bullets, and then after 6 shots, the groups get to a few inches.

It then looks like there is a lot of Copper in the muzzle, and it takes me 30 minutes of KG-12, Flitz and Kroil, KG-12, Flitz and Kroil, to get it out.

Or my brother can put in Hoppe's #9, wait 24 hours, put in Hoppe's #9, wait 24 hours, Put in Hoppe's #9 wait 24 hours, etc until the Copper is gone.

When I take 4 different 7mmRemMag rifles with Copper free bores to the range at the same time with the same ammo, all 4 Copper foul at different rates.

+1

If it keeping shooting well, don't worry about it. Don't worry about the copper fouling until accuracy becomes unacceptable.

Re: copper fouling

Here's what I do... I pull the bolt, point the rifle at a white surface in a well lit room and look down the barrel. If all surfaces inside the bore have the same sheen and look shiney it's good to go! I have NEVER specifically cleaned a rifle to remove copper...

And no offense Sermonator, but I would never recommend using something that will rip even more life from a barrel with each shot that a bullet does on its own. That Tubbs Fire-lapping stuff... WHAT A SCAM!!! You're actually paying for bullets that will reduce the life of a barrel by leaps and bounds! WOW! I read an article that makes it sound like the best thing since sliced bread. Hell, it even almost had me convinced. But then I came to my senses...

See the problem with cleaning? It was working fine, you cleaned it and found something to worry about.
