Cover Songs.

Some of my favorite covers:

Sepultura cover of New Model Army's "The Hunt" Followed by the original version

Judas Priest covering Joan Baez's "Diamonds and Rust"

Mastodon covering Alice In Chains "Again"

Clutch covering "Fortunate Son"

little known punk band from Detroit called Murder1 with Kid Rock guest vocals covering Marley's "No Woman No Cry"

Not a U2 fan, but I always liked their cover of "Paint it Black"

Johnny Cash "Hurt" will always be the hands down best cover (even Trent Reznor said "Its his song now). That whole album is just gold (American IV I beleive) level covers.

So as a distant second (its about to get dusty) Original: D. Bowie, Cover Peter Gabriel:

One of my favorites!
Yep, and lots of folks don't know it's a Thin Lizzy song. In fact, I think that's one mark of a truly successful cover - when the song is far better-known by the cover than the original. Most of the ones I posted are in this category.

Edit: I should have mentioned that the song is centuries old (traditional Irish folk song). Thin Lizzy's version is closest to what Metallica was covering.

Not sure I would call it a cover vs. a guest appearance but Alison Krauss singing These Dreams with Heart pretty much killed it.

So, for all of the Bob Dylan haters out there… Yes, better performers have covered his work but without him we would be much poorer (i.e. no Hendrix cover of All Along the Watchtower). Hendrix even did an awesome Like Rolling Stone. Dude did pretty well selling his song catalog for $150M-200M at the age of 80.

That said, I like his sons work (solo and with the Wallflowers) more.

Another question is who is the best singer/songwriter. My vote would be John Hiatt, he’s had some great songs but I don’t think the artists covering him have done better.

Not only one of the best country songs of all time but most people don’t know it was actually a cover by George Strait.

Amarillo by Morning was originally released in 1973 and sung by Terry Stafford who co-wrote it with Paul Fraser.

My favorite GS song. Not at all surprising he didn't write it, but I was unaware it had been previously released by another artist. Great example of a cover so great that the covering artist "owns" the song.

Anything Iron Horse does is worth a listen. I am not a bluegrass fan but these guys can always make my day better. I dont particularly enjoy Elton John‘s music but this I can listen too all day.

Is it a cover if it's old classical?

Same group covered the same song twice with different singers. Keyboardist is the head of the group.

I like floor Jansen the second female better than tarja turunen. Floor is married to the drummer of sabaton (backward ball cap in 1916 video). I like Marko hietala the first dude and bassist better.

Thank you! I always thought VH covering Roy and Dale Rogers acapella was both funny and cool at the same time. I liked 'em both, but they are quite the juxtaposition.

@Alphatreedog - left me hangin', dude. So disappointed. 😉

There are some really good ones in here, nice hearing the different versions. Some I like others not so much. A great many from Post Modern Jukebox are really good. I am going to link a couple here. The first one, much more famous then the original. The original is really vomit worthy, just horrid. Amazing another group saw this song and knew it could really be something. The two Postmodern the first I really like, the second they have done a few times with different singers, but I think she does it the best.

And while we are here on the second video, the postmodern, left to right 1,2 or 3. 2 has a voice that just hits me hard.

Another cover that I like.

She covers "Shine" by Collective Soul.

The Sword covering Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song"

Corrosion of Conformity cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "On The Hunt"

Anthrax "Remember Tomorrow" originally by Iron Maiden

Ugly Kid Joe "Cats in the Cradle"

Government Mule covers a lot of musicians that I enjoy.

When I lived in NY I worked at a local tire/auto repair shop. Guy used to bring in an 80's Ford Escort diesel that he wouldn't get rid of because it was his dads.
He was the drummer for Government mule. I went and saw them at Mountain Jam.

Metallica covered "Stone cold crazy" from Queen. That one's pretty badass.
Godsmack has a few and they are all awesome.
