CQB Sound Effects?

I have been tasked with acquiring horror/disturbing sound effects for CQB training. Examples would be baby crying, woman screaming, heavy gunfire, etc. Anything which would be distracting, emotionally disturbing, cause fear, etc.
We have a muslim call to prayer, very heavy metal, etc, but it is time to get very weird, and hopefully someone out there has access or has used soundeffects in real world training scenarios to affect the training environment.
Thanks in advance.

Phil

Re: CQB Sound Effects?

Compressed air/sudden gas escape can be very startling/distracting. Sirens and things like that should probably be implemented too, since that type of noise would be encountered quite often its probably a good idea to have everyone acclimatized to that noise. TV's and radios on full volume would work too, action movies and loud background music can be distracting or partially drown out communications, etc.

Re: CQB Sound Effects?

don't have any tapes but could think of some distracting sounds:
The car with the busted muffler and the load boom box/extra base...
Screams of a woman giving birth, wailing of someone
There are some pretty loud burglar & fire alarms...check with local alarm companies
Any unrecognizable foreign language - Assembly of Gods/pentacostal "speaking in tongues" can be somewhat disturbing from my recollection...
Hissing; barking of some big dogs
Crashes - alum. trash cans can do a good job
Creepy (funeral home) pipe organ
somebody pounding on a wall or pipes
Very old TV shows coming on suddenly

Whatever you choose you'll need a decent sound system to make have any effect

.
I think starting the entire scenario...with a soft female voice saying ... "Im Pregnant" ....would fill that requirement very well.

Sorry couldnt resist, I had a cd/sound files with a TON of different sound bites if I find it I'll let ya know.

Re: CQB Sound Effects?

I can record the baby in the apartment next door that begins wailing at 2215 every night, like clockwork. I think they must have a megaphone(s) hooked up for him too...he has some serious pipes.

Just found this today, and it is truly scary! I would be like WTF if I heard this during room clearing..Hope this kid never gets ahold of a gun.
I'm pregant...that would be terrifying..!
Great suggestions, and I will keep you posted on what I work out.

Re: CQB Sound Effects?

Yep, that would probably work!

A baby crying is always classy and well as women screaming! Always a joy when clearing a family house to have the women start getting upset and start screaming and then the kids start in. Really depends on the scenario. i would tailor the sounds to it.

hobby money, guns, motorcycles, knives, cameras, lenses

Re: CQB Sound Effects?

The high pitched warbling alarm that many alarm companies use would be excellent. Not only is it likely to be heard (I have had to work through it more than once) but it has the capacity to destroy comms with the team and command and also to cause nausea if exposed for too long.

Female shrieks of pain and death metal are also good.

Re: CQB Sound Effects?

If you just want something easy that can be downloaded from itunes then I have a few tracks to recommend. Mike Patton's album "Adult themes for Voice", anything by the band Merzbow, some John Zorn projects like "Six Litanies for Heliogabalus" or Maldoror's "She". I think what people find the most disturbing in music besided the "noise" is lack of a tangible beat. Preview these on Itunes and imagine them cranked to 11.

Re: CQB Sound Effects?

I've used halloween sound effects cd's for entry training. Just loud and annoying enough to be distracting. I found a bunch of free stuff on the internet using "haloween sound effects". iTunes also has some stuff like that.

Re: CQB Sound Effects?

Numbers Stations. I hear there's a CD compilation out there. I think this shit would be pretty distracting and disconcerting. I know it tends to creep me out.

Re: CQB Sound Effects?

Dude,
What the hell is up with that? Reminds me of LOST, the TV show. Weird transmissions and stuff.
Thanks for the leads.

Re: CQB Sound Effects?

Women sobbing, low crying really gets under my skin....mostly because your brain naturally goes to "Why would a woman cry like that". Especially in a quiet entry situation...more than enough to distract a compasionate person from what they should be doing.

Me at least!!! German Kid Angry though is earrie.

You want to add 'test' and 'distraction' to the mix. Don't forget about the eyes. While sound is aggravating as hell, human eyes are naturally attracted to movement. Subconsciously.

So don't forget strobes (simple) and they don't need to be in a constant pattern. They also don't need to be in a standard setting. Placed randomly throughout the environment, some can flash rapidly for 2 seconds and be off for 20, some can be set to flash once every 45 seconds, depending on where/when/how it is mounted, and also depending on its location to an actual target/non-target focus-point.

Morse-code playing in the background can also be insanity-driving. There's no pattern to it, and especially if it is in another language or cryptically done, even if the person knows Morse they wouldn't be able to make sense of it whilst they're supposed to be focusing on the situation at hand.

Whereas one who's trained in it automatically goes to 'translating' mode. Again, subconsiously.

Lastly, don't forget the sound of a herd of mice/rats/rodents all the sudden scurrying and squealing. And have those speakers located low, too. Maybe with a strobe. There's some who're afraid of them and their instinct is to jump up on a chair and grab a broom.

Have fun with that. Put 'em through their paces. Make 'em better! It don't all need to be 'LOUD' to be effective. Snakes hiss and rattle.
