So I was flipping channels, and see this episode, which, without giving away all the precious breaks from reality, labels a guy shooting from a rooftop a "sniper." Why? Because he shot from 300 yards away! Oh, and he has these exploding bullets filled with nitroglycerine. My god, the horror!

The things that made me LOL:
A) So he's a mediocre marksman...any bubba with a six-pack of beer and a hunting rifle can hit a torso at 300.
B) The way the actor yanked the trigger, no way he'd have hit anything at 100 yards, let alone 300.
C) Nitro is too sensitive, it'd go off from the concussion of being fired, or the heat in the barrel. Boom! dead "sniper", end of story.

Oh, Hollywood, you never fail to amuse.

I'd like them to explain how the "exploding bullet" cruised through a plate glass window without exploding...

Missed that one. So glad I missed that one. My wife loves those shows and I cringe. Usually leave the room because I can't keep quiet about calling the crap I see so she gets mad at me.

What was the movie with the dry ice bullet or something like that?

I don't know about those CSI franchises.

They seem to be a bit smug and snide about gun issues, and quite a bit of their 'lore' is total bunk. I believe a lot of pointless and baseless gun control tomfoolery appears to trace directly back to those shows.

I think they mislead the public at large, and do careless disservice to conscientious gun owners.

I like the NCIS shows much better. At least they have some military flavor to them.....but they do have the token "ex-seal" on one of them. Got to have an ex-seal to legitimize any black ops show.

You have to watch some mindless TV one in a while.

Re: CSI:NY "Sniper" made me LOL

You know the part I really hate? When I go to a real fricken crime scene, and every Joe Blow and his momma know what I should be doing, because everyone knows that's how CSI investigates!

Fingerprints are NOT on every surface, it's hard to lift them. We don't have fancy hand-held gizmos that scan everything and magically run through massive databases in 5 seconds...the stuff you see on CSI, if real, would be worth billions. If we took every hair from a burglary crime scene to process for DNA, it would take years to go through all of the results, and most of it would be dog, cat, or the residents.

We save the big stuff for homicides, but everyone thinks their crime, even if it is a stolen bicycle, is the biggest most important thing ever. Reality sets in when the cops leave after asking a few questions and finding out there are no viable suspects and no one saw anything. We can afford to spend a hundred man-hours and three full-time guys working on a property crime. Wish we could, but no way.

You are more correct than you realize. Nitroglycerine has a two inch drop test. The impact from it falling two inches is enough to kaboom it. It kabooms over 20,000 fps or something like that.

If CSI isn't fake enough, check out "24." That's the worst of the worst I've seen.

DITTO!! I can't stand taking a case to the Grand Jury only to have their questioning turn into a "grilling" session on me on why we don't have either fingerprints, DNA or videotape evidence of the crime.

They see it on TV & wonder why we can't simply magnify the video image from the ATM camera across the street & see the suspects face! or why I couldn't get fingerprints off the cinder block that was tossed through the store window.....it drives me crazy!

Re: CSI:NY "Sniper" made me LOL

You cant take prints off a cinder block?
but on tv they can .. I work in a high crime area and when ever we have a break in or something I love asking the cops
if they are gonna dust for prints and take hair samples out of the car and set up road blocks to find the stolen car stereo
oh and I always ask for the det. to call me and keep me informed as well it drives the new cops crazy.
