Is it truly just setscrews to retain a threaded joint? I.e., no preload on the threads...
 
Correct, or you can torque it as normal. The locking set screws have been tested extensively. So simple, but it works.
 
So oddly enough it would load the threads - the two bunny ear set screws push the barrel agains the bottom thread half...which would then pull the whole barrel towards the action in a fairly uniform fashion. It would always favor the bottom of the action in position, but if torqued might work good.

The better the thread mate up, the better it would return to zero.

Only issue for me is seeing how that shank holds up over time to multiple screwings. That and now you only have the threads on the shank that are left holding it in.
