My buddy bought a used rifle off gunbroker that was advertised as a rem700 5r milspec 26" barrel. He can't find anything on whether or not Remington ever produced the 5r with a 26" barrel. I always thought they were 24". I guess the guy he bought it from said that it was a custom order from Remington. Just wanted to post this for anyone that may know. Doesn't sound right to me!!

If it was a custom order from Remington then anything's possible. It is widely said that the first 5-R's were actually a product of Remington's Custom Shop to begin with. To my knowledge the 5-R was never in the Remington Catalog but was a "Limited Production" product. They built them as time, material, and market conditions warranted.

I know that mine, which I bought shortly after they introduced them had a lot of signs that it was more "Custom" than Factory Production, starting with a trued bolt face.

Remington 5r milspec rifles are not a Remington cataloged product, Acusport, a firearm distributor orders these rifles made to their specifications from Remington. And to the person who says his friend has a 26" barreled 5r milspec in 308 Win, ask to see the original shipping box.

Thanks for the replies. I did some searches earlier and came up with the same - 24" for a 308. But if it was a custom order, I guess then anything could be possible. I asked him about the original box, and it didn't come with the rifle. I'll have to go take a look at it next week and see what I can find out.

He asked me what a good starter bolt rifle would be and I said I've always heard good things about the 700 5r's. He found a used one on gunbroker and bought it before I could look at it, but I'm not really sure what it is - just hoping he didn't get ripped off.

The term "Milspec" is a creation from Acusport not Remington so I doubt if Remington made a custom rifle with a 26" barrel in 308 Win and boxed it with the word special milspec 5-r barrel on the box. Without the box it's only hearsay.

Yup.

Call Remington and give the Serial#, they will tell you box may be long, long gone.

Remington XCR long range came with 26 inch 5r barrel that was my starter gun in 308. Not sure if it was mil spec or not but they still make the rifle hope that this helps.

A box talks and bullshit walks.

It's not in the catalog or i have yet to see it. Got mine almost 5 years ago from Scott at snipercountrypx he carries them regularly when they run out he waits on remington to produce another batch. As you said though i've never seen it advertised by remington at all. It's weird, like a hidden rifle or something.

Have you seen this rifle?

eta; It is well known these like the 'box' depicted above come from Accusport.
Earliest versions, the origins not so clear. It is also seen that 5r rifling can be found on non 5r labeled product.
I remember Savage 26" long action 308's. I had one. Been a while.
Call Remington for sure.
Look for the details in this rifle.
Bullshit don't walk.
