Gunsmithing difference between m4 and ar15

Re: difference between m4 and ar15

That's like asking what's the difference between 2 Ford's.

In short an M-4 is a 14.5" barreled carbine with a collapsable stock and a fun switch (full auto). The AR-15 is a civilian version of the M-16.

Narrow it down some and ask again.

Cheers,

Doc

Re: difference between m4 and ar15

Ok, lets assume all ARs are basically the same. The major difference between the AR-15 and the M-4 is the internal parts that provide the 3 round burst. If you look at the outside of the lower receiver, the M-4 has an additional hole for the different parts above the selector switch. This is the major difference, but others include, the Ar 15 lower has more material on the sides that would be milled out for the m-4. The bolt carriers are different as well. some ar-15 bolt carriers have been modified (material removed) from m-16 carriers.
On the accuracy and functional side of things, The M-4 has "M-4" feed ramps milled and polished in the bore as well as a "real" M-4 upper. These are to ensure the proper feeding of M855 ammo. Now days you can get a true m-4 minus the selectable lower and correct bolt carrier from colt but you will pay a pretty penny for it. If you are looking for a .223 M-forgery, I recommend building it yourself. It is normally less expensive and you learn a lot more about the weapon than you would by just buying it complete. But its up to you.
