Listening to the latest Everyday Sniper Podcast, Frank references proof barrels and states they are in their third generation of them. I am wondering if anyone could give anymore insight on the differences, changes and if there's any testing of the current gen barrels under longer strings of firing?

I have a bergara HMR in a MPA hybrid chassis(Well soon hopefully cause its been ordered). Kicking around throwing a Proof barrel on it to cut down some weight cause I'll be packing it around a bit, but I also plan to do some varmint hunting and want to be able to put 15-20 rounds down range without a major poi change. I don't mind a little verticle shift but need something to maintain minute of squirrel to like 500yards.

I heard that too and WAY in the back of my mind have been wondering the same thing. Thanks for asking because I wouldn’t have remembered too!

I don't know which generation dictates what changes, but I do recall all the old conversations. Some argued that carbon wrapped barrels provided a higher rigidity to weight ration compared to a legacy barrel - makes sense. Then there was the argument that carbon wrapped barrels had better heat dispersion and thus longer barrel life - the other side argued that the epoxy (for lack of a better word) used to seal in the carbon weave created a shield that trapped the heat in rather than pushing it outward, thus cooking barrels. The only thing I can say for sure is that in the past 3 years, I have heard fewer arguments one way or the other, which tells me that manufacturers like Proof continue to innovate which benefits those of us willing to spend a premium.
