I painted my rifle last year and figured I'd post some of the progression pictures since I didn't find too many on the web while looking for examples. I think it turned out pretty good and only slightly different than the current A-TACS pattern. I used a little green, light and dark, and not as much brown since it's mostly green for 3 seasons here.

The rifle:

DPMS upper and lower
Fulton Armory match 18" barrel
Fulton Armory BCG
Fulton Armory quad rail (higher than upper rail, oh well)
RRA two-stage trigger
Surefire brake (soon to have suppressor attached)
SWFA SS 10X mil/mil scope
Larue scope mount

The painting:

base coat with tan
sponge generous patterns with lighter tan
sponge select areas with green or light brown
sponge those areas with a lighter version (mix with other colors for in-between colors) to create shadow effect from the darker colors
fill in open areas with light or dark colors as desired (I went back and used a template to spray dark brown, then sponge off a little)

I think you could even do a spray method, followed by sponging off the excess to get a similar effect. I simply got as many different paint colors as I could find as home depot and lowe's and worked off paper plates, mixing and matching to get a good transition from color to color.

Damn that looks great! I would pay you to do mine if you were local.

Thanks! It was tedious trying to get various shades but I was home for a couple weeks with a newborn and snuck off while everyone had their daily nap :)

I'll take more detailed pics if I help my cousin paint his rifle.
