I'm looking for a scope for rifle that will be a 100 yd paper puncher, deer hunting rifle, and 500 yard steel ringer.

Would a 2.5-10x suffice at 500 yard shots? (I've never shot that far before, so I can't draw on personal experience)

On a related note: can anyone reccomend a good scope in that $350-$450 (maybe stretch to $500) range? Right now I'm looking at the vortex viper HS.

10x is MORE and sufficient for game and even 1moa targets (with contrast) at 500. If you aren't looking at needing to be able to take quick shots under 50yds, I would even say a fixed 10x would do the trick nicely. SWFA SS 10x in a mil/mil configuration would be a very nice scope in your budget range in that instance. They sell easily as well when you're ready to step up to the next level of optics.

X2 on the vortex. I recently got a vortex viper HS in a midway special 5-15x44 mil/mil and I have to say that it is a great all around scope. All I have is NF scopes and I love them but man when you hold the viper next to one you realize how large and heavy they are. I am super happy with mine but wish it was moa cause I am not digging the mil thing. Going to stick to what I know. Best of luck man.

I would personally get a Trijicon Accupoint 2.5-10x56mm scope. It has the zoom range ideally suited for deer hunting and with the 56 mm objective dusk and dawn times will be extended. I haven't shot it out to 500yds but I have heard others shoot that distance with only 10x.
