My wife is voracious reader and I'm looking for a birthday gift. Any one know much about the Kindle, Nook or whatever else is out there?

- Do they use existing wifi or is an account required (like a cellphone)?

- Are books downloaded to the hard drive or do you access them via the net?

- Pros/cons of either version?

Thanks

Re: Ebooks help, please

From getting ebook readers for significant others, I would suggest the Nook Tablet or the Kindle Fire. ($199 to $249 range)if they would like something cute and techy that you can do lots of stuff on.

Both are cute & colour and do books, music & movies.
Both of those options primarily work off wifi when you want to download more stuff, stream media or sync stuff.

Now if they only want to go with books and a nice black & white page and little else, the Kindle / Kindle Touch, Kindle Keyboard or Nook touch will work very well at a lower price.

You can also go with one of the Kindle 3G models that works off either wifi or it can download via 3G, those are lighter with longer battery life, but it's mostly only books since it's black and white.

Most all of the ebook readers download a bunch of stuff and then you can store more online and download it when needed.

Re: Ebooks help, please

My Lady has the entourage edge (out of business?) and still absolutely loves her device. It folds like a book, has a reader on one side and a browser on the other. The screen turns into a keyboard, so typing is very easy. This connects via wifi, wherever one can log into a signal. Has two camera's, and a mic.

Not only does this thing do whatever she want a reader to do, it is also for messaging. That, and our intent of it being a video receiver at the range, is the final intended goal. This unit is the full-size one, not the 'pocket' model. Hard drive, USB's, card readers, it has/does it all.

I don't know about the "fire" version of the kindle but I have the black and white e-ink version of the kindle and it's been great. Durable enough to survive a deployment in 'stan and continues to work as advertised. Has been great for travel.
