So my buddy was telling me how he put out some traps in hopes of catching some coyotes. Long story short, he trapped everything except a coyote. And had to shoot all of them. A fox. Coon. Skunk. Buzzard. Some other crap. He doesnt skin them. Just wants to thin them out without having to hunt. I wasnt very pleased with his trapping results. And cant help but think there are thousands of other "trappers" just like him.

I was never a fan of trapping (because you never know what youre going to kill). And this just gives me a more sour taste about the whole thing. In 2017, people arent trapping as a way of life. In terms of meat/fur/clothing in order to survive like they did 100+ years ago. In those days, you skinned/ate anything you caught. You had too, to survive. But now, not so much.

So my question is, should trapping be done away with or what? Its not like hunting. When hunting, you can select what you want to bag. Trapping is just a guess. I know for a fact many animals of all different kinds are trapped and killed just to be added to the gut pile. Should states make it to where trapping isnt just a lazy mans game? Where you should have to check in trapped game? If I have to check in a deer I selectively bagged, why shouldnt the lazy trapper have to check in animals he kills of all different species, he wasnt even pursuing? Seems lazy and carless to me. Especially if you arent skinning the animals. Not to mention its illegal to kill buzzards. And I know more ppl than just my buddy has caught them in their traps. Many ppl here place their traps around or close to gut piles. And what comes to gut piles? Everything.

So what is the answer? I dont know.

Imho, trapping in 2017/18 is cruel, inhumane and totally unnecessary (except in a survival type situation). All it does is give the anti-hunting extremists cover to paint all hunters with the same broad brush.

Don't like losing freedom, but I do agree with certain regs on what type of animals are legal to kill, and I'm quick to report anyone doing dumb shit like killing protected species. Why don't you report your buddy to the gw for killing buzzards?

We use live traps for hogs checked daily. Rarely get anything else in them down here.

I have trappers currently working here in the woods around the Schloss... on my invitation. Trapping for fox and fisher. They are here twice a day to run the line. I asked them, specifically, not to target the bobcats that I have caught on my game cameras and they have chosen their scents accordingly. So far, have eliminated several fishers and a couple of foxes. Nothing else.

I don't trap myself. I never wanted to. But damned if I am going to oppose something that humans have been doing for 5,000 generations.

Back when I lived in the People's Socialist Republic of Massachusetts... there was a big grass roots movement among moonbats and knob-gobblers to "Ban Cruel Traps." Bumper stickers, referendums, votes, crying children on the nightly news, pining for the lives of the poor foxes.... Whatever. They passed the law and destroyed 400 years of trapping in Mass. Within 5 years, the nattering classes were complaining that their McMansions were getting flooded due to beaver dams (sorry, no trapping) and that their cats were disappearing due to fishers and coyotes. Rabies was up several hundred percent. And even the suburban 'animal control' trappers... couldn't remove animals due to the stupidity of the broad regulation. My reaction... I hope all your houses flood you peckerheads. You asked for this. Now, live in a chain of ponds, bleeding hearts. You wanted nature. You got it. Now, shut your pie holes and live with it.

I don't like the idea of an animal in a trap myself. So I don't set legholds. But I will tell you that my HaveAHeart traps are only humane.... until I shoot whatever is in it. And if people want to make livings on pelts... damn if I will stand in their way!

Cheers,

Sirhr

P.S. Though I've never set a leghold trap in my life... I've been a member of the Vermont Trappers Assn. for more than 20 years. I send in my dues to protect freedoms... not to trap critters.

I have been around trappers and traps all of my life[69 yrs young] and there is some good and some bad.
I have seen both.
It all comes down to the first word in your post. Ethics
Few now have the ethics or the skills necessary to check their traps every few hours or the skills as to how to properly make a set and how to set the proper set to get what you are after. Good trappers know, most don't.
You have seen how it shouldn't be done and it is tough. However, there is a time and a place for traps but it should be done correctly.
Colo. outlawed leg-hold traps years ago with a vote from the Bunny huggers from other foreign countries such as Cal. Mi.NY TX etc.
That put an end to a lot of trapping right there. Have a Hearts are the thing now. Check one out full of Mama Skunk and a couple of little ones just for fun sometime.
We now have a plethora of critters around in places they didn't used to go before and all of these foreigeners are bitching about them being in the trash etc but don't hurt the little darlings but they better not be here tomorrow.
What the FUCK do they want?
They moved here and built houses where these animals were born and raised and wonder whey they are around and such a pain in the ass, after all,, I built my house out here in the middle of no where.and I have 10 acres and a horse?
No market for fur anymore either.
I don't trap but have sure shot my share. FM

Trapping is regulated, people born after 1989 must go thru a trapping certification course here in Minnesota, there is lots of good information on trapping in your respective state hunting license handbook I would assume. I know that's where the information on trapping is for us. I am all for trapping. It is a hell of a commitment and a lot of work. I know several trappers and they are ethical and take a lot of pride in doing it right.

I have trapped on and off for 40 years. I have caught non target species. The better I got at it the less non target species I caught. Trapping is cruel. So is hunting. So is cattle ranching. Get over it. You are killing things for meat, hides etc. You are killing. I believe in responsible trapping. Some people who are wearing leather shoes a fur ruffed coat and have chicken salad san for lunch and hate hunting and trapping are hypocrites. Managing fur species because they worth something will make sure they will always be around.

First they keep us from shooting lions, then they say its cruel to hunt bears and lions with dogs, then they outlaw it along with trapping and all hunting. Next they take our guns away because that is cruel too after all. People who don't know dick about wildlife management are deciding how to do it. People who don't know dick about guns are deciding if I get to keep mine.

I mean fuck it. It's the dismal tide.

We trap feral hogs out of self defense and shoot them a lot too. They interfere with our making a living.
We trap coyotes, have declared war on them, they go after new born calves, again, interfering with our making a living.
They have decimated deer populations eating the fawns. The state has declared coyotes open season pests because they ruin hunting, so, reason two to remove coyotes by whatever means possible and trapping is preferred effectiveness.

We prefer professional trapping ethics and the state has animal cruelty laws that help remove unprofessional trappers. There are means to deal with them in pretty much every state. Report offenders to the wildlife enforcement people.

For the buzzard protectors, if you have ever seen them peck the eyes out of newborn calves and colts, and rip their noses off and tongues out, leaving them alive requiring them to be killed and disposed of, you wouldn't be surprised that there are buzzard kill permits available through the proper channels.

I know, thats not the same as trapping one as the OP described, but there are times Buzzards have to be removed.

Farm life isn't for weak stomachs and can definitely offend a certain group of peta's... it IS what it is.

Some of us will object to any anti trapping laws that interfere with our making a living. See above, we prefer professional trapping ethics... repeat as neccessary.
Sometimes though, even done right, it can appear pretty rough, or cruel to some. But when it becomes neccessary, trapping is just another tool to some of us, and we use every tool we can get to continue to make a living.

Hope this is educational for some who aren't aware of the actual need for trapping.

Good post thanks. When it comes this type of thing that I have lived my whole life and I see people want to outlaw it, I can't think strait I get so pissed.

I worked as a wildlife biologist for a while in my younger days. The old school bio I worked for always laughed when people worried about hurting the coyote population with trapping and hunting.
My favorite quote of his "If a coyote and an elephant were the two last living things on the planet, I guarantee you that coyote is going to figure out a way to eat that elephant" He did say the only thing that ever put a dint in their population was the old 1080 stations.

A local guy still traps for coyote in the area.
"Pup" has been trapping as long as I can remember.
Like any and all endeavors there will always be a bad element involved.
I can't support taking their rights away because of a few dickheads.
The above sentence could be applied to gun ownership btw.

Like some of the other posters I've been around traps and snares for most of 40 years. Like Huskey, genocide has been declared on yotes, year round. Traps snares, rifle, kill them all.

Traps have advanced in the last 40 years. Higher catch, thicker jaws, better chains and stakes all contribute to a animal fighting the trap less. Less fighting, less damage on non-target animals. I've walked right past mid-winter fox that were sleeping after been caught in a properly modified trap.

Around here we have four trappable animals; yotes coons, skunks and red fox. The fox get a pass, I released several in the 2016 fall. Easy to do with a 30 gallon trash can. All the others die.

Traps and snares a just another set of tools in the box to harvest a renewable resource. And the anti gun/anti-hunting/anti-trapping/anti-meat eating shit-for-brains extremists will never be satisfied no matter how much one coddles them or kisses their ass. If we went back to farming with horses, they would call every pile of apples a EPA disaster zone. Those morons need to get real cold and real hungry in the real world.

I am 62 and have trapped my entire life. It is some of the hardest work I have done pursuing a recreation. The incidentals caught such as possums or skunks help the ground nesting birds like quail or turkeys. Remember, trappers are the first line of defense for hunters.

i am all for trapping.

you think trapping is cruel? go visit a "modern" farm. whether it's a dairy farm, a turkey farm, or whatever......if you drink milk, or buy meat in a grocery store, you are contributing to things far worse than trapping.

trapping can be VERY humane. if done correctly, kills are fast and efficient. saying that trapping should be banned because you know a guy that nailed some non-target animals seems silly to me. a fox, a skunk, and a coon? shit, sounds like he killed some game killers to me.

what's next? bowhunting? fishing? how about shooting? you dont need that thing that was made for killing anyway. yall need to check yourselves if you fall for this shit....

Fur prices should be higher so more people would trap skunk, fox and coon. Too many of them around and too much rabies. If your buddy did not shoot your cat or dog you got nothing to bitch about.

Some quality posts here. And some good information. Im not for banning trapping. Because it is effective when done professionally. And banning something just opens the door for more banning. One local farmer snared over 40 coyotes this year. Pretty good. Protecting his livestock. I would just like to see more care in what is done to non targeted animals. Trapping seems like throwing a wide net in a river and keeping every fish you net. Should you kill every musky and pike because they eat the bass? Of course not. Im not one of those people who thinks every animal with canines need to DIE because it may eat a game bird or fawn. Please. That is pure tunnel vision if I ever saw it. The world doesnt circle around "game" species. Every animal has its place and reason. I find it hard to believe that any nature loving hunter/outdoorsman wouldnt agree. If there is predators harming your way of living, by all means, kill them. I have no quarrel with that at all. But to trap and kill everything in sight because it may eat a bird or deer is pretty ignorant in my opinion. And those trappers give anti-trappers ammo. And I cant say that I dont care about what goes on in slaughter houses, because that is out of my control. And yours. But that it is still a shitty situation for the animals. Yeah, we're going to eat them anyway. But at least treat them respectively. I mean, we're all going to die too, but dont we want to live decently until then and have a peaceful outing? We can go on and on about humane/inhumane scenarios all day. But thats not what I intended this topic to be about. This topic is about killing shit that doesnt necessarily need to be killed.

Diverdon, I seriously doubt youre being stampeded by "too many" foxes. And if its not my cat or dog, I have no opinion? Is that mindset also like..."If they didnt shoot your family member, who cares?"? Ol turkey hunter "Joe" who traps and kills anything with canines because hes afraid it may eat a turkey pisses me off. This summer the turkey were regularly coming into my front yard and I could count them. There were 15 little ones. Guess how many grew up out of those 15? 15. And we have a healthy number of coyotes and fox around here. Not as many bobcats. So to say coyotes/foxes decimate turkey populations is bullshit. Turkey isnt exactly an easy meal. I feel that is often used as an excuse to mindlessly kill shit. Any real hunter knows that the major portion of a coyotes diet is made up of rodents/seeds/fruit/vegetables/grass. Not turkey/deer. Ask any vegetable/fruit farmer what their biggest menace is. His answer will be "a coyote".

And I didnt rat my buddy out for killing the buzzard because what kind of friend would that make me? I did however tell him I didnt like it. Not because it was a buzzard, but because it was something he had no intention of trapping/killing. Have any of you ratted on every single illegal thing one of your friends have done? I didnt think so. If so, I wouldnt trust you as far as I could throw you.

No, I have not been stampeded by too many foxes. But I have had to take my 87 year old aunt for the full series of rabies shots after she was attacked by a rabid coon and had her left leg chewed up as she struggled to get in the door of her home. Another friend Paula needed the shots as a precaution a few years ago. A coon was coming toward her in her garden and her German Shepard intercepted and killed it. But in the shaking part of the killing process blood and saliva was slung across her face, and after consulting her doctor she was advised that she could catch rabies if as little as a single bacterium had got in her eye.

When I was a kid fur prices were higher and people made good money trapping skunk, fox and coon. That kept together with the hunting kept the populations thin enough that rabies never became wide spread. Where I live, at current densities these animals are a problem and anything that gets rid of a few is a good thing.

In so far as turkeys go, around where I live it is the fishers that have decimated them.

Do the fishers climb trees and get them while they roost at night?

slaughter houses? that's the least of concerns. you talk of respecting the animals....i say you need to go to a farm that practices modern farming technics. if you call that quality of life, then you and me have very different definitions.

and little to no control? wrong again. i eat almost exclusively animals i have either killed or caught, or raised on a farm with love and true quality of life. i paay extra for it, but i believe in it.

i think what trapping really is, and what you have it made out to be in your mind, is two very different things. you are way off track. and i mean WAY off track. i wont even start on disease and starvation. a re-assessment is in order.

Yes they are extremely agile tree hunters ... and damn aggressive hunters..
They will take ground birds in the daylight, seen them kill grouse before and the
spring turkeys.

More of them die by state poisoning than trapping.. at least in the 7 western states..

Folks that call trapping cruel, need to watch a wolf kill an elk, its the death of a hundred bites,
then they follow and chase them just keep them moving till they bleed out.. Damn impressive to watch...

Furs still sell hard in the far east and Russia,, no substitute if you live in a arctic circle environment.
Too much work for me these days but it kept me in 22 shells and gas for my mini bike as a kid..
15 bucks bounty and 10 for the fur for Coyotes back then..

the not skinning part is what gets me, if i trap it i use the fur with the exception of yotes. that said my sets are too "flashy" for yotes and doubt id ever get one.

Shoot once a fat squirrel triggered my 550s with a 3/8 gap. pan was set to 3.5 lbs so this was a healthy squirrel. He go skinned and tossed onto the bonfire we had that night for a snack.

is it inhumane? not if its dont right. use the correct trap for the species your targeting, use of a swivel or two in the event they roll twist or turn, follow local laws and make sure you dipose of carcasses somewhere people wont run into it..... Ive seen that happen where people dump the carcass 10 feet off the well beaten path and of course news blows up on a dump of dead animals...

308220, I think you may have learned something here. In my first post I mentioned about sets done right, those seldom catch anything other than the target animal
"Professionally?" or done correctly? There is something to think about. Many amateurs are good at what they do then there are professionals that don't know what they are doing but advertise their expertise.
My farm is open to trappers and I sometimes have trouble finding the right ones that do it right. I don't want any Jack off yoyo's doing it wrong so I filter through a few of them.
Do you eat veal? Check out the production of veal and I doubt you will order too many veal cutlets after that but there is a demand for them. Mostly by people who have no idea where it comes from. I won't eat it and I am a farmer/rancher. FM

Anyone want some leg traps? This jackass decided it'd be a good idea to set a bunch of traps on my property without permission a while back and I believe I still have them all sitting in the garage somewhere taking up space. IIRC there were 8 of them. Guy was pissed that I took his traps so he cut down some trees to block the road. Tried to get the law involved, had his license plate in a game cam, face shots, etc but this guy is a council members kid or the mayors kid (grown ass kid, that is) or something. Nothing ever came of it, but he didn't come back after that.

I think this is the model. https://www.sportsmansguide.com/prod...SABEgLhvPD_BwE

If he comes back and you score some MB550's, I'd be very interested. :-D

It's terrible to trap predators
TFgZjybs.jpg
...of course that's nothing compared to being ripped apart alive by a pack of them. I've lost 90% of my sheep to coyote's this year. I don't trap because it causes more problems than it's worth but I sure as hell am not going to tell someone else not to.

It's never been my thing, but I respect the tradition of responsible trapping and would happily learn it from an old timer just to better understand it if nothing else.

Alabama runs formal education opportunities to better educate trappers or potential trappers: http://www.outdooralabama.com/alabama-adult-trapping-workshop

I'll give this State credit for common sense game management and stewardship while striving to keep it safe. I just completed the exhaustive online course and written exam required to operate any motorized vessel (including personal watercraft) on any Alabama waterways. Even running boats most of my life I learned a good bit. I'm awaiting my certificate so I can head to DMV and get my boating license. I figure being the designated driver for my budddies will get me a few more fishing invites

Imho, trapping in 2017/18 is cruel, inhumane and totally unnecessary (except in a survival type situation). All it does is give the anti-hunting extremists cover to paint all hunters with the same broad brush.
God im sick of this limp wrist attitude....its the same bullshit applued to people who own AR and " bunp stocks"........oh is gon a make us "real" owners....or us "real" hunters look bad......fuck you.

peiple who are anti hunting are going to be just as anti hubting whether trapping exists or not.......just because its a practice you dont like, dont use the "it just givrs ammo to the antis" excuse.......

tge same coyld be said for people who spear hunt......."oh its cruel"........well what about bow hubting?......hubting with a muzzle loader?..........i mean what if you miss vitals and wound the animal?.....why hubt with an antique?......why not hubt with a modern rifle?.........oh but you cant hubt qith an AR 15, no one need 30 rounds to hubt with..........why nit just ban hubting all togetge then?...afterall...no ome NEEDS to hunt.......

see where im going?

As a kid my trap line ran 15miles west an 5 miles east. Rode it everyday w/o issue on my mini bike, pulling a home made trailer. Used the money made to buy more trapping supplies, 22 ammo, an fishing supplies. The kids in school thought I was nuts, an me them, as they had no clue about surviving w/o "the store" much like many today. I made my own cold weather gear from the hides, an it beat most anything store bought (save lots of stuff from L.L. Bean or Gander Mtn, back then). If you really what to see/know how cruel mother nature is, live/work on a farm, or live w/o "The Store" for 6 months or more. Trapping is/was a way of life for none city folk an those who understood one needs life skills, not wishful dreams when the chips are down. When your paper money will not put food on the table, an pay your bills, enjoy your end times knowing there are those who will never miss a meal, (or many other things) while they revert back to true life skills. As long as the system rolls along it's all good, and we don't have to have life skills, but someday,...

Trapping is inhumane, period...No respect for anyone that thinks trapping something to suffer a miserable death is a moral or noble thing to do. A long time ago when people did it to survive? Yeah understandable, but today there is no place for it. Why don't we take long unethical shots while hunting? So the animal doesn't suffer. Yet these same people have no problem stringing something up in the woods for a day at a time...total double standard.

Well....there you have it. End of discussion from someone who knows absolutely nothing about trapping, but has no reservations about shoving it down my throat. Sound familiar?

I'm not inclined to apologize for killing the fuck out of animals that cause me problems out here on my place. I do my level best to follow the rules, though.

The op's friend needs to work on his trapping skills.

Very familiar. I haven't hunted for a couple decades so I guess we should ban hunting.

I have no respect for those that would ban something just because they disagree with it.

The same could be said for the guy that shoots his gun one time a year at a deer with no other trigger time and not knowing if the rifle is even zeroed. I know of several people myself that fall into this category and almost every year wounds a deer and doesn't bother spending much time looking for the animal. I could keep on giving examples but I will stick to the original topic.

I have no issues with trapping, my dad ran traps before I was old enough to go with him and really wish that I would have had the chance to learn from him. My cousin is one hell of a trapper and there are plenty out there like him. As with anything, you have a few that give it a bad reputation for all of us.

Anyone that goes out hunting and doesnt even know their rifle is zeroed deserves just as much criticism. I won't defend anybody that directly does something to cause a living being to suffer. With that said, every time someone sets a trap they know with 100% certainty that whatever they catch is going to suffer which makes it much worse IMO.

I don't trap either. Too me it seems a lot of work, and the payoff for the animals I could get around here is quite small. Sure wish fur prices would rise until it was worth it for more people to do it.

Some of the opinions here are quite "unique", to be sure. Especially surprising, considering the site and the genre of members. But then again, I guess there has to be "sappers in the wire" in every group/situation. Time to run down the OPSEC discussion again.

Or, time to rout out/run off the peta-gobblers?

I mean really, as long as we get rid of "those" problems, all other problems will go away, right? Isn't that how we eliminated cancer, by not painting cribs with lead anymore?

So I guess you don't like fishing either, then? Hell, do you even drink beer?

A nontarget animal can be released and most will be fine. Hell I used to catch the wild cats at my granny’s with 1.5 long springs cause they wouldn’t let me touch them. They were released and fine. Kill sets are a little different, but shouldn’t be used by someone that isn’t good at targeting what they’re after. FWIW, I’ve sprayed deer hearts on the leaves behind them and they managed to run 50+ yds.

You don't have a clue if you think man, is worst than mother-nature. Get out more you might learn something. If man operated like mother-nature the world would be a much, much better place, w/o full time tit suckers, whiners, in-breeders, none working, game playing types. Many people are educated beyond their intelligence.

Someone wanted a kinder, gentler trap, so they came out with the soft catch steel traps with rubber on the jaws to soften the hold. Problem is, a soft catch trap is more likely to cut off all blood to the foot than an offset, making it more likely the critter may chew its foot off or cause perm damage to the foot. Moral of the story is, if you don’t have a fucking clue, mind your own business.

I wish some of you jack holes, who clearly know nothing about traps, or trapping. Would go learn about it and quit making shit up. You win a daisy crown for the day hippie. In fact it is hippies like you that made instant kill body hold traps illegal in my state. Snares often kill faster than bullets also. You think it doesn't hurt to get shot? Nature is rough, but creatures gotta eat.

It's terrible to trap predators

...of course that's nothing compared to being ripped apart alive by a pack of them. I've lost 90% of my sheep to coyote's this year. I don't trap because it causes more problems than it's worth but I sure as hell am not going to tell someone else not to.

If you ever need help I'm sure we can round up a bunch of people to kil themsukkas off

The coyote's around here are tough to kill. I've tried calling, bait, and a combination of both. I have guard Donkey's (wild donkey's sold by the BLM) and a big ram. The coyote's are very cunning and move on if they suspect anything. Some ranchers have resorted to Great Pyrenees guard dogs...you need something to stay with the flock all night long. Coyote and feral pig hunting is pretty high tech in Texas.

Using NV against critters with NV. That's just inhumane.

I bought a dozen of those soft catches a number of years ago and used them. The chew out rate was way higher. My Airedale enjoyed it though. He had a nice blood/scent trail to follow. I ended up taking the rubber off and modifying them. Problem solved.
