She started out in the mid-50s as one of those singers who made it more acceptable for certain kinds of music to be listened to and played by mainstream Americans of her day, sort of in the way that Elvis and Jerry Lee bridged certain subgenres sitting between R&R, R&B, and C&W. The substantial difference, of course, being that she was coming "from the other side of the tracks."
