Disclaimer - ballistic software programs are realtively new to me.

I use JBM's engine exclusively. I like the format, the math seems accurate, and I like the G7 BCs from Litz.

That said, I'm now in the market for a portable, PDA-based ballistic software program. Since I won't own an I-phone, the JBM engine is out of the question.

I'm looking for recommendations on a plan B. Is there a clear second choice for someone like me?

Any leads or recommendations would be appeciated.

    Thanks

If you're not willing to buy an Itouch to run Ballistics FTE, or one of the other apps, then your choices are limited.

The cheapest solution is to get a used Palm Pilot off Ebay, and run Exbal on it.

There are several very capable programs which will run on a Windows Mobile PDA like the HP iPAQ 111.

Those include Field Firing Solutions and Patagonia Ballistics.

Either of those programs will also run on a Trimble Nomad, if you need a full milspec ruggedized and waterproof system.

Or, you can just use JBM to build a Density Altitude dope card for your load, in which case all you will need in the field is a source of barometric pressure and temperature data. This also works as a backup for you if you have a field ballistic computer which dies in the field.

glock24, I generally dislike Apple as a company, but it's hard to beat the Touch...basically an iPhone without the phone or the expensive contract. There isn't much that can, er, touch it, especially for $200. Heck, you can take it out in the field with you then read Stephen Hunter books in bed at night without waking up the old lady...or surf the 'Hide.

Now that is a cool little gadget! I remember somewhat recently as I was punching data from my Kestrel into my PDA why somebody didn't integrate the two devices -- and from JBM!

For V2, I humbly suggesting adding an inclinometer -- one feature I appreciate about the Shooter app on my Android phone is the ability to act as a slope doper

I went to Patagonia Ballistics Loadbase about two years ago and have never looked back! It just keeps getting better and it is easy to use but has many tools that will help to get things dialed in better and run accuratly at longer ranges.

The Ballisticomp looks as if it would be a useful tool to use.

With the way conditions change,I think it would give the shooter less things to think about. Once the parameters are set,go with it. The concept sounds worth while to me. I would rather spend my time on making the perfect shot in a timed match and getting a handle on the wind at Thunder Valley.

Shooter should have this functionality sometime pretty soon (ability to pair with your Kestrel).

With the economy the way it is, find electronics is getting hard -- many of the parts that I need are not available when I need them (it's not like I'm ordering millions...). I've order the beta boards and will be a couple of months for those, so later this year, hopefully.

Re: Exclusive JBM user needs another program

I use an Itouch with BulletFlight loaded on it. It is very accurate and easy to use. The Itouch also serves other purposes, so that helped me to make the decision. It will cost you more up front to purchase the Itouch, but the app is really cheap. There is also an app available that uses the JBM engine.
