May be a stupid question but I have a factory sps 20" take off barrel laying around and was kicking the idea of getting a Rem 700 action and maybe getting lucky with headspace and factory recoil lug. Also what work would a smith have to do to fit the factory barrel to an aftermarket lug, if it's possible or even worth the effort? The barrel was very accurate but removed it to switch to 6.5cm.

You could get lucky with a factory lug and I suppose you could "adjust" the headspace a bit by using shims or surface grinding the lug. An aftermarket lug, depending on the thickness would require cutting a new shoulder on the barrel to set headspace.
