Gunsmithing Finishing Scope Mounting Hole

Hi all,

I just tried to attach a scope mount to my Remington 700 and the most forward mounting hole is unfinished. There is a small ridge of material left in the bottom of the hole which doesn't allow the scope mount screw to travel far enough to seat the mount.

Will a bottoming tap strip this material out, or will this require drilling/machining?

Are you sure the "small amount of material" isn't the barrel tennon? A lot of times you have to cut the screw shorter for the front holes.

It does look like a thread. It travels left to right across the bottom of the hole.

It's barrel thread, the front hole is through drilled, just grind a little off the front screw.
