I have a new 700 5R sa, 36 rnd ct, I noticed firing pin hole is teardrop shaped & large,about .0095 compared to rest of my 700's .0087 & perfectly round, called Rem they send send it in & they will inspect it, & repair if needed......
another thing I noticed was bolt face was cut out around ejector, none of my other 700's are this way,& I havent noticed it on any before, has any of you seen either of these conditions ? I know the firing pin hole is wrong, cut out around ejecter ,not sure,
one more thing why are some lugs tapered on leading edge & others sqare? thanks for any help with these questions

maybe not using the right word, but the round plunger has a cut out area around the part of it closest to edge of bolt face, I need to work on being able to post pics,Ill try later tonight, thanks for all the insight & help available here,

I have 5 other R700's that dont have it,or have very minute relief , guess its something new, or I just never noticed it. Ill be looking at all the bolt I see now thanks for info & posting pics , Im still trying to learn how

Yes. Quite common and the reason for bushing the FP hole.

It can be a safety issue if the hole is big enough for the back of the primer to burst upon cratering.

Gre Tan is the place to send it. They turn the firing pin so it's true. They drill out the bolt face and press in a bushing to fill the hole. A new firing pin hole of the appropriate size is then drilled. I believe they charge $75 with shipping. Turnaround time is fast too. I had them bush the FP, thread the handle and install two screw through the handle into the bolt body. It was back in the mailing to me in less than a week of them receiving it.

Even with top shelf impact resistant lenses......if that didn't cause serious physical injury, one may well experience serious mental and emotional distress, post-traumatic stress, and for the rest of the shooter's natural life, probably couldn't concentrate on squeezing off nary another shot without the distracting and intrusive thought whether this primer too will spew.

Most guns vent away but who wants to try it? Its a safety issue.</span>

sent it in to Remington because it was so new,couple a weeks &36 rnds, any way yesterday they said they had repaired it & it is being shipped back, they only had it couple a weeks i thought it would take longer, but I'll post again when i get it back & see what the repair was, thanks for all responces ,

My hole (M700)is bigger than it should be. It actually allows my primer to blow back into the hole. Not to the point that it pierces but leaves a nice little tit on the fired primmer. The rifle is chambered in 6.5x47 so it's a small rifle primer. I assume if it were large I might pierced primers. I plan on having it bushes as soon I take a break or during barrel swap (that's not to far away :))

bolt after repair I dont know what caused this marring , looked at receiver, no burrs i can feel or see, maybe they removed the bolt handle, oh well guess they done there best, thanks Remington

after getting it back there was, black fingerprints on out side of barrel, so I wiped it down , thought I'd run a path through it before puuting it away, wow its dirty, so I look in chamber & see liitle black- brown curly things, looks like something off 3m aoutmotive cleaning disc- what is this anyone know? any way after much cleaning, you could say I'm less than impressed with both thier work & lack of concern customers property, if I turned out work like this I'd fire myself & find a job I wanted to do to the best of my abilty, trying not to be negative but its not working, maybe I just dont know what its supposed to be like , maybe this is ok work in the real world maybe I been in woods to long,at least it was free,........

Are you sure you got the same bolt body back? I would guess for them it might be more feasible to put a new bolt in it as opposed to a special setup to bush the firing pin hole. This would require the handle to be timed to that action... Might also explain markings that are new/different than the bolt you sent.

they said the replaced the bolt & ejector,when they time the bolt to this receiver would that account for the galling marks by the bolt handle ? what do you think the scotchbrite looking hairs were from in chamber area? there are bolt raceway type marks lengways on bolt to like you would expect to see on a well used gun, I guess I just didnt exspect to see all the marks , maybe thats normal , I dont know, but I sure would have thought they would at least cleaned the debri out of the chamber, what if I just got it back & just went out started shooting,without looking at chamber? the outside & a dirty bore is no big deal but debri in the chamber is, at least to me

I know they test fired it because went it went to them it was sparking clean inside & out , I cleaned the bore between every shot for 1st 10 then every 5 for the rest of the 36 rnds i put through it & I cleaned it again before I sent it,& when I got it back the bore was heavily fouled, it still has visable copper showing on riflings I havent been able to scub off yet, and bolt face has brass imbedded in it yeah they test fired it, a lot, because after 1st 10 rnds the bore had all but quit fouling, dont know how many it would take to foul it this bad but way more than 5, when I cleaned it at range after shooting 5 it only took 10-12 strokes with brush & 4-5 patches on a jag till they were coming out white, I just hope none of the scotchbrite stuff is embedded in the chamber, after I get to range again Ill look at brass real close, before & after

Willoughby...that is a different bolt face. The "scuffing" by the handle is from the bead blasting they used to match the bolt handle to your rifle after silver soldering and timing the bolt handle to your receiver. (If, indeed, it is your original receiver. Have you checked the serial numbers? Do the assembly numbers on the barrel match up with your receiver? They can replace the whole rifle, you know.)

same serial # as before on receiver & last 4 dot etched on on bolt body, same as before,not sure if they etched # on a new bolt body or just hammeredon firing pin hole, its still loser than all my wore out 700's, maybe firing pin is larger diamenter but I doulbt it, as for the marks the're definatly scratches, you can catch your nail on, not smooth like bead blasting, looks like something hard got stuck between bolt & reciever & it got worked a few times with it in there, maybe Im slow learner but Im still thinking about buying another 5R in 300 WM,who knows mayby it'll be good to go right out the box,... nobody stocks anything out here in woods everythings mail order,buy it then look it over, but there is no better place to live , this is truly last best place,public land as far as eye can see, any way if this thing will shoot tiny little groups, I'll forget all about this mess if not, I'll sell it & try a savage with a Mcmillian stock, DBM, 1-10 twist, accutrigger, & a long action that dont limit coal, for same price as I paid for my remy

just found a new # on barrel a tiny little AF marked on left side near receiver, I think this is where they mark it to show it has been repaied at REM,used to be that way dont know if it still is, they marked my 7mm there back in 86

went to range today, brass looks good, primers look good, but the bolt still closes hard with a round in it, & normaly w- out a round, just to check my ammo, I chambered one in my vls with no problem normal resistance open lowering bolt , exstract same round & try to chamber it in the 5r & its much harder to close bolt, to hard to reliably chamber a round even in a controlled inviroment like range, if a guy had to chamber a round quick he'd not be able, I'm gonna call rem back & see what they say,I know one bad apple dont spoil whole bunch but it sure leaves a bad taste in your mouth, I will say this though the 3r shoots well when it does shoot, moa & better while fighting bolt & doing a ladder test

after a little more testing I have to report egg on my face , went & got some factory ammo, & bolt works flawlessly, just like it should , so why did reloads work in my vls? has to be that is has a larger chamber, I have a go no go gauge coming tommorow from a friend to check my dies, my reloaded 308's always worked in my old adl & my vls,both must have deeper shouldered chambers, ?? any way my apologies to Remington, & all who listened to me ramble on
