    Hey all,
This is my first post here as well as my first bolt gun build.
    So here it is:
    407543_578340185269_79802119_31792662_71633603_n.jpg

Remington 700 SPS-V (26" heavy 1:12 rh twist), sitting in a B&C A5 stock, with Millett LRS-1 (6-25x56 mil/mil) 20 moa base. I'd like this rifle to be a good 1000 yard 1moa rifle (eventually). Pretty much everything is stock. It has 52 rounds down the tube with good results (first 5 shot group using 168gr fgmmm):

until i pulled the trigger on #52... An o-ring came loose or un-done inside the tube of the scope. So it will be sent back to the manufactorer. by the way i do have lower rings coming as well as a harris 6-9 bipod.
Ok i'm going to cut to the chase, I am active duty military and deploy for whats looking to be about a year in less than a month. The government does not pay me enough to afford what i'd really like to have especially since i'm in college as well. I am seriously considering leaving my gun with a good smith. Work i'd like to get done while being gone on deployment:
<span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="text-decoration: underline">Action:</span></span> Trued, blueprinted with new barrel. And bolt fluted.
I recently bought the KRG bolt handle ("cover": http://www.kineticresearchgroup.com/products/boltlift.php) and really like it. It doesn't move around, and make the bolt much smoother and easier to operate.

As well as action work i'd like to get a new barrel. I would love everyones opinions here. As stated above i'd like this to be a good (not f-tr or crazy good_which usually equals crazy money) just all around good barrel that will shoot the heavier 175-178 at around 1moa at 1k. So i'm thinking a 22-24" 1:10-1:11 5r barrel (eventually threaded for a suppressor). Which barrel manufactorer? idk i'd like everyone opinions.

So there ya go. Hope to hear some good stuff.

One last question.I know almost nothing about suppressors however I was told that it is possible to have one suppressor for both my Noveske Ar-15 which has an AAC Blackout 51t flash hider and for this bolt gun. Possible?? If possible, good idea?

Thanks for you input and taking your time to read this.

Welcome to the 'hide. Thank you for your service to our country!

I think you should stretch your rifle out more as-is, before spending a heap on it. Most of those rifles shoot lights out without trueing or rebarreling.

I think you'd be better off waiting until you know your rifle is holding you back - which will probably be a while. Maybe spend the money on finer glass?

If you're SET on having it tuned up while you're away busting ass, consider Mark Gordon of SAC. He as a ~$750 tuneup package that includes trueing, setting barrel back, rechambering, recrowning/threading, triggerjob and boltknob conversion.

The 1:12 is fine for the 175's.

I run a Krieger. Shillen, Lija, Rock, Bartlien, etc are all great as well. Look at lead times and then you can make a decision, if time is a concern.

Other than that, sounds like you are on the right path.

As for the suppressor, I'll let someone else take that one.

Re: First Build/First Post... Would love opinions!?!

If you can swing it, I would go ahead and get the action bluprinted and a new barrel. Grab one in 1/10 twist in case you want to shoot the heavier grain bullets. If you cant, at least get into reloading. That helps out tremendously.

Having your equipment fine tuned the best you can get it done gives you more peace of mind in your equipment and allows you to concentrate more on your fundamentals without having doubts in your gear.

Re: First Build/First Post... Would love opinions!?!

Thanks for the replies guys, I consider myself a pretty good marksman.
Do I consider the rifle 'holding me back' as is? Not nessecarilly. However I do thinking that it has potential to shoot much better, while it may cost a little bit extra, I will be deployed for the next year so why not get the work done now instead of waiting 6 months at a later time when it is holding me back. I strongly believe my skills as a marksman or long range shooter are good enough to get the best out of what the gun has to offer as is.
I spend lots of time reading and researching as well as practice things like nPOA, and dry firing to get everything right hopefully the first time when getting behind the rifle. I also understand that nothing can take the place of putting rounds down range.
    Looking forward to more responses.
    Thanks guys

Re: First Build/First Post... Would love opinions!?!

    I run a 1:10 on my 308 and I am shooting 155.5's, 168's, and 175's out of mine.

I, like ShaneRemmy, would go to a faster twist just for the reason of going heavier than 185-190 gr.

But for the 170 grainers, the 1:12 is adequate.

    By the way, Nice Weapon!!

Re: First Build/First Post... Would love opinions!?!

I would leave it alone. They shoot good enough stock. You were smart getting a stock that is adjustable so you can be comfy behind the gun. Save the money for ammo, and shoot. The only thing questionable in your setup is the scope. Well, you've already encountered a problem with it so maybe that's not questionable anymore...lol

Re: First Build/First Post... Would love opinions!?!

I made the mistake of buying a rifle, shooting it and then deciding to strip it down and upgrade everything. It took about 5-6 months to get it back after ordering parts and sending it off to my Smith to put it together. Now, I'm finally putting rounds through it again.

While you're away, get it done and when you get back all you have to do is load it and pull the trigger. That's what I'd do.

After i get the scope back from repairs or if they just send me a new one, it will likely go up for sale and get replaced with either a falcon, or vortex 5-25 or something like that. depending on how deployment goes how much i save and pay off in school loans. all just kinda depends on what happens with this deployment.

work will more than likely be done while on deployment. save time when getting back and take it directly to the range zero it and strech it!

Re: First Build/First Post... Would love opinions!?!

1/10 twist, 24-26", fluted, have the action work done and have the stock skim bedded.

Vortex viper PST, Sightron SIII, weaver tactical 3-15 or 4-20, Bushnell tactical 3-12 or 6-24.

Leupy will give you a discount, one of the new vx6 4-24's would be worth a look.

    Get back safe

Re: First Build/First Post... Would love opinions!?!

I wouldn't do all the work on it. Shoot it as is or get a stillers custom action and a good barrel. Timney trigger and that stock you have. Or keep it. Skim bed it, get a vortex pst ffp and you'll love it.

Re: First Build/First Post... Would love opinions!?!

As stated before good glass, get that scope mounted lower if at all possible, and get a brake installed and you're set. That package will serve you well for years. The brake mainly so you can watch your rounds impact, not for recoil.

Thank you for your service from an old devil dog.

    Good luck,
    Merritt

Re: First Build/First Post... Would love opinions!?!

I have found a good trigger will help you with your groups as much as anything else. If that is an X Mark trigger, I would get something else like a Jewell and see how it groups.

Re: First Build/First Post... Would love opinions!?!

It looks like it is shooting great for a factory barreled action, I would just change out the scope and put a new trigger on it.

I have been very pleased with the Sightron SIII in MOA/MOA or Mil/Mil. I have 2 so far and will be getting a few more. It is almost as nice as my Nightforce for a lot less money.

Re: First Build/First Post... Would love opinions!?!

Looks like you already have a (sub)minute rifle...
Getting the work done is certainly a good idea if you're set on it, but it looks to me like you've already got a weapon capable of your end game (1000).

As someone new at long range with my sons, I have to say that the two biggest factors- for us- are handloading, and trigger time.

The two are related. Handloading not only gives you the ammo that is perfectly tuned to your rifle (once you get it figured out), it allows you to do it less expensively than factory ammo.

Does that save me money? Hell no... we're going to Manatee (1000 range) next week. I'll load minimum 100 rounds each for us, 300 rounds total for a day of shooting (plus some milsurp and hangun practice). The bullets and powder alone cost nearly $150...BUT... we're all going to pull the trigger a LOT more than if I were buying factory ammo.

For me, handloading isn't about saving money, it's about shooting more, and learning to dope the wind. I've found that the most challenging- and the hardest to learn- part of the hobby. While any decent shooter can hit a target well at a few hundred yards, when you get out to 600 and beyond it becomes so much more difficult due to the external influences on the bullet.

Thank you for your service, and good luck with the long range game. It's addiciting...

its an honor for us to service. as for the rifle being sub min. that was with 168's and that was the best group of the day, although i know that i have such few rounds down the barrel it was pretty inconsistant holding right a solid 1" 5 shot groups which by no means am i conserned with.

I think I will probably end up getting the work done just to know <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="text-decoration: underline">the rifle is at its full potentional now</span></span> <span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="font-weight: bold">i need to catch up to the rifle. </span></span>
