I took this guy opening morning 15 miles up river from my house. It was a planned ambush on National Forest land that came together as I had hoped. I was at my 8000' lookout before daybreak with my Desert Tactical packing the 22.5" SAC 338L barrel/running a 300 Scenar.

I watched a herd of about 30 work their way up to me for almost an hour.

It was an easy 350 yard shot, but had to be patient, passing up 6 bulls in the herd as I waited for this guy to show up in the rear.

I enjoy being up high, and usually spend 20-30 days in the mountains during the season on my own, enjoying the hunt, the beauty and the fair chase pursuit!

The scenery shot is from my lookout.

This year, however, I had both Elk down in the first hour of the first day hunting...not my norm.

A week later I dropped this nice cow @ 75 yards with the same setup, first day, first hour. A herd of 400 + passed right in front of me.

    Very nice. Is he a 5 x 5?

Yes, he is a 5x5, interesting deal on this herd, there was a 6x6 in the middle of the pack, smaller w/o much mass. This guy was definitely the herd bull, a full 1/3 bigger in body and more mass to his headgear. This boy's tenderloins were as large as the back straps of the 3 year old cow.

There are bigger bulls for sure, but this was a special hunt for me, so I am having him mounted to add to the wall with these guys. Hopefully next year I will get a real nice mule deer buck to round out my wall.

I have both, but if you really want short the covert can do it all. Sometimes I like the longer SRS version so I can use the longer rail for impromptu rests, like my pack

Only a pound difference? What is the shortest barrel length for the SRS version? Which would you get if you could only keep one?
