So, I "bit the bullet" - HARD - this past couple of weeks. I ordered a GAP Thunder Ranch rifle and a Schmidt & Bender 5-25x56 with MSR reticle.

I haven't installed a scope before - and have a couple of NOOB questions.

My rifle won't arrive until Spring - am I OK installing the scope and rings on another rifle until it arrives? Or is there some sort of "set" that is specific to a rifle?

Any other tip to install a scope? Do I eyeball the reticle prior to cinching it down?

Thanks in advance.

Re: First Scope Install

You are OK with installing scope on one and moving it to another, however, depending on the scope bases of each rifle, if they are not the same e.g. Weaver bases, Picatinney or slotted like some Leupolds, you may need different rings. So check to see if the bases are the same on each rifle. If so you might want to look at some "quick detach" type rings. These usually come with a lever type screw on the base mount. As far as mounting, follow the instructions that come with your scope or there are several really good tips to be found on this site. I personally level the rifle in my gun vise or, if fitted with a bi-pod, level the action from side -to-side using a good spirit level. Mount the rings to the bases and leave the sope loose enough in the rings to adjust your eye relief and verticle reticle alignment. I hang a plumb line at about 30 to 50 yards and use that to line up the reticle. Double check everything and tighten the rings. You should be GTG.

Oh, by the way. I use Warne rings. there are a jillion choices out there. Just don't go with cheap rings and get or borrow a good torque driver so you don't over tighten the screws. Most scope/ring manufacturers recommend something usually in the 20 to 40 inch lb. range.
