For those of you who are planning to customize foam for your rifle case and who are not wishing to build or buy expensive foam cutting devices, and who don't wish to do sloppy cutting with box cutters, etc, <HarborFreight.com> has a foam-cutting hot knife, Item #66182-1JTH, for sale at $14.99. Hard to beat price for a seldom used device. JMHO

bow style would work better. as it allows for more intricate designs to be cut. however as OP stated for the cost, it is cheap solution.

I used an electric knife for mine. Worked well and left a nice smooth edge.
