Well I posted in a different thread about my bolt lift being "gritty" upon cocking.
HateCA and wnroscoe pointed out my cocking piece and ramp on the bolt were probably galled.

I took my bolt apart and sure enough-the cocking piece had etched a ragged groove in the ramp it rides on during cocking.

I smoothed out the rough stuff and then sanded/polished the face. I also smoothed and polished the "nose" of the cocking piece.

Upon reassembly it still felt a little crappy, so I got out my old JB Bore Paste (thank god for Brownells samples!), dabbed some on the ramp and under the nose of the cocking piece and raised/lowered my bolt handle in the action about 100 times with the trigger pulled back so I'd cock on every lift of the bolt.

After cleaning thoroughly and relubricating the parts that ride on one another it feels better than in as long as I can remember.

Do you all think that installation of a Wolff "extra power" mainspring could have aggravated this condition, or just more signs of Remington QC falling by the wayside? The bolt on this rifle (started as an LTR new in '06) has always sucked-I already had to deburr and smooth out the extraction camming surfaces, and they don't look timed to well to begin with.

Re: Gritty bolt lift fixed

I had the exact problem then the cocking piece broke, I smoothed out the ramp, bought a factory Rem firing pin assy from Brownells, I took my bolt up to S&S and JD, Stick and the guy who built my rifle Gene Williams all told me to grease the the shit out of the bolt shroud threads before reassembly, they all said that the lack of grease causes the shroud/cocking piece to bind/gall the bolt ramp, so now I grease the shroud.

Yes, and this can also be one of the main reasons with aftermarket pin assembles that guys will complain about heavy bolt lift.

That being said it don’t take much to start the galling. A little dirt or not enough grease is all it would take.
