I've been loading H1000 in my 300wm with pretty good results but, I'm about to work up a new load and, I was thinking of retumbo.

Are you guys getting better velocities out of retumbo?

I'm about to work up a 208gr amax load but, I've been launching 220gr smks about 2800fps with no issues... what should I expect to see with retumbo and the 208gr bullet?

Re: H1000 or Retumbo

H1000 is a fine powder. I can speak for that one but, Retumbo is slower than H1000 and, since I'm trying to get the best velocity out of this thing, I may try some retumbo to see how that goes.

Don't know what your rifle will like but, my pet load with 220gr SMK has been:

Win brass
Rem 9 1/2m primers ( I happed to have a lot on the shelf so I used them )
H1000 71.5gr
SMK 220gr seated kissing the lands.

Now, you can load a lot more powder if you come off the lands a bit but, my accuracy suffers quite a bit if I do that and that load makes about 2800fps which isn't too shabby for a 220gr bullet. I've loaded on a hotter accuracy node but, I start wallowing out primer pockets when I do that and, I don't like buying brass that often. lol

Re: H1000 or Retumbo

Of the two, after load development and testing, I went with Retumbo. Accuracy was much better but my load was using the Nosler 200 grain Semi Point bullet. I also used Win Large Rifle Magnum Primers.

Well, I'd like to see as much velocity as possible without tearing up my brass too much.

I'm shooting a lothar walther 26" 1:10 twist barrel... I expect to see somewhere around 2900+ fps out of this but, I haven't loaded any yet.

jwoolf,

Different rifles react differently as do barrels, but my 22" is giving me 2870 from 76.2 gr of H1000 in Fed./Nosler brass. These are loaded long (approx. 3.650" COAL, .010 off the lands... YMMV) This is a conservative load as I have almost 20 loadings on some of the Nosler. I'm guessing you should be able to get 2950 comfortably.

Re: H1000 or Retumbo

thanks, John. That's about what I expect too and, I just got the order of 208s from midsouth yesterday so, I may go and load a sample and print some today if I can shake loose.

clinto,

you said you're getting a rifle in, correct? What are you building? What bbl length etc.?
